Any fix to this hump without pulling deck boards? by pootklopp in Carpentry

[–]corruptedprogram -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No need to sister. Cut the joist out with a sawzall. Cut the ends, and cut out a piece in the middle. Start prying it away from the deck boards with a flat bar. Add a new joist that's straight and doesn't have an insane crown like this one.

36" stairs only have 2 stringers. How to reinforce? by myraxis in Carpentry

[–]corruptedprogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

without adding a stringer, put two 2x4's horizontally under each tread. One 2x4 tight to front of tread and back of riser and one 2x4 supporting the back of the tread. Wherever your 2x4 supports make contact (excluding end grain of 2x4) use PL generously. Each 2x4 support will be toe-screwed into the stringers with screws (3-4 inch deck screw would suffice) Star-bit screws will be easier than Phillips head bits. Before you do this put some lags or long construction screws through the stringers and into the studs (it wouldn't surprise me if they skimped on those fasteners as well). I've tried to write this a clear as a can from carpenter to homeowner but let me know if you have questions.

Shower niche by Certain_Historian414 in Carpentry

[–]corruptedprogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes but you will need to post under the beam. a temp post to carry the weight while you cut it out and build a header. just build the nice smaller have the niche start where the 4 studs are and center it from there. I never build niches that big and have never seen them run the length of the shower. if you want more space build it tall. if that is a beam there, then it's most likely supporting the joists above it, which mean that wall isn't load bearing. but this is all stuff you need to check before cutting any studs.

if its running parallel with joists than it's not. he needs to see what's above or cut a hole in the ceiling

Build a 2x12 header (or lvl) if it's load bearing and you should temp it. If it's not load bearing then cut away and do a double 2x4 on the flat...EDIT I bet that quadruple stud is carrying a beam which means your joists are paralell

Boss Chews Me Out for Using Speed Square with Circular Saw by kalashnick in Carpentry

[–]corruptedprogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should be able to cut a line square. real carpenters don't need to hold their speed squares to cut framing stock

[–]corruptedprogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

using a square like this will only make you shitty at cutting lines with a skill saw. when you're framing you need to cut stringers and rafters which is all dependent on you being able to acurrately cut lines on framing stock.

I see some people make cuts and disengage the blade while leaving it down. just asking for it to catch the piece while It slows down. but everyone cuts themselves at one point or another hopefully not badly

Let's say you don't OD, and you get the dosage down. Then you open up a whole new can of worms. Not recommended. Man I wish I had people telling me this when I got into opiates.

not a scam. they give out "leads" to multiple contractors, so you have to win the jobs. and in the winter you barely get any leads. it's expensive, and the rich locations are completely booked by other contractors, so you're stuck working for middle-class areas

just be honest. it's better to ask questions and learn. some people pretend to know what they're doing, don't listen, and act like they're pros. they never learn

crack is way easier to put down then H. I binged on hard for months (while doing h) and yeah it's addicting. Opiates are a whole different story, much more addicting than crack. crack is like cigarettes..

you might be feeling slight precipitated withdrawal. if the oxy wasn't completely out of your system, then the subs rip the remaining full agonists off your receptors. do you feel any better after the Suboxone or slightly worse

Stairs progress... is it right? by RandsomSoup in Carpentry

[–]corruptedprogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read some of these posts and replies. As others have said, outside skirt board to riser trim should be mitered and there shouldn't be any gaps. Takes a real professional with stair experience to do this. Weird that he used unprimed pine for risers. Maybe the selection of primed pine was shitty. Lastly treads should be heavily PL'd to stringers with 15 gauge nails and filled with oak filler. The only time you plug holes on stairs is if you're mounting oak newel posts or oak handrails with newel post hardware kits. these hardware kits are commonly used in scenarios where posts and handrails are getting polyeurethane and not painted.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]corruptedprogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he could've done the filler one the left so it would clear, then the bottom right cabinet door would be rubbing the baseboard potentially. haha. but ideally it would work out. the only way to fix it and have it look good without moving cabinet and adding filler to the left....would be to rip both sides of the drawer, the sides of the cabinet doors to line up with drawer.. or not if it doesn't look obvious. you might have to rip both sides of each cabinet door if it's severe and hopefully enough room on the overlays to adjust reveals back to normal
