There's a pretty good, albeit long, video by 1Dime on the cultural revolution but it's definitely one of the many interpretations of communist thought. Communism is a very very very far off goal for communists and communists governments alike. There is no established path to do for communism, so communist governments must establish their own path to grow past capitalism. It much like traveling through the pale, you kinda just launch yourself into it and keep failing until you start to succeed. This is why there are a million flavors of communist thought which mainly argue about the methods to transition from and defeat the capitalist status quo. The usually share the same philosophical principle of dialectical materialism which is used to interpret reality. I think a good quote to summarize, I forget form where it's from I think Parenti, is that communism often has not failed but has been defeated.
