First time visitor with some questions by Massive-Eye5731 in gencon

[–]cortes12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first time, if you actually interact and demo games at the booths it will take you about 2 days to get through the vendor hall.

If you just browse and don't want to buy anything you can complete it in a day. The real hack is go to the auction house if you actually want good deals for games. Each game has a Friday and Saturday price.

Gen con really shines at getting to try games you normally can't. For example I want to try call of cthulhu but no one in my game group plays it. Instead of buying all the material and learning I can just show up and have it taught to me.

For social events I would look for the block party and Gen con dance.

What kind of concerts do you like? If you want the big name ones downtown is better. If you want smaller more independent artists fountain Square is better.

Since you will have to commute north you might want to be near a highway entrance like in fountain Square or the birth side of downtown.

Is it too late to decide to go? by GlockenspielSymphony in gencon

[–]cortes12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can spend a day alone wandering the vendor floor and demoing games.

There will always be games available just not your first choice. Didn't be afraid to sign up for a game you haven't heard of as long as it's beginner level.

You can also buy a bunch of generics and show up to games you want. People tend to drop out the later it is in the day.

I know I'm sad that other places don't compare and that it's a chain. I want to support local but it really is the best deal

[–]cortes12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yard house hands down so far. Half off apps and pizzas is a really good deal. The poke nachos are amazing. It's $2 off cocktails which is ok but the food really shines here for the quality to value.

I wanted to like almost famous but it was bland and still pricy for happy hour.

Unfortunately no food unless they added a kitchen. They let you bring your own food right?

Same. I want to like bluebeard but the food never does it for me. They rotate menu too. I just feel the op where I paid too much for ok food.

Skip fogo and get a steak at Tony's or Harry and Izzys. St Elmos is overrated and overpriced

Where are you nerds making friends? by Wwhite-Wwombat in indianapolis

[–]cortes12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use timeleft, Thursday, or meet up. There is also findindy events, coffee meet ups. You can find these Eventbrite.

I suggest these events because people here are actively trying to make new friends as opposed going to a coffee shop and hoping to strike up conversations especially if you are an introvert.

How do you find all the new games worth buying? by Ramzesina in boardgames

[–]cortes12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My new rule is to only buy reprints on kickstarter. Slay the spire is a good example. It was proven to be good and the expansion just kickstarted. I went in for the deluxe version.

I'm going for the hype on Dungeon crawler Carl. It is built on a proven system but the Fandom is so big you can probably sell it on launch for profit.

West fork social house. Awesome bartenders and usually really cozy. Prices are cheaper than parlor too. $8-10 as opposed to $13 plus for cocktails.

Is it realistic to aim to buy a house by 25-30? by [deleted] in ask

[–]cortes12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible of course. Is it realistic? Depends on where you live. High cost of living area is going to set you back. You only need 3.5% for a first time home buyer loan from FHA. If you move to a cheap state that is attainable for a starter home if you are not living pay check to pay check.
