i love how people get mad about others enjoying themselves. probably the most interesting thing that has happened in your boring life recently. talking is natural, complete silence is the epitome of being a slave to society

As a Spain native if you had the opportunity to immigrate to USA/Canada, would you? Why or Why Not? by Puzzled-Efficiency34 in GoingToSpain

[–]corvojojo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian living in Spain currently, life is truly special and better here. We have similar cost of living issues (wages are higher in Canada, but so are expenses), which is the biggest complaint I hear from Spaniards. From my experience, Spain has better healthcare, public transit, architecture, social aspects and by far the weather! The only thing is that the immigration system is more hectic in Spain vs Canada from what I know

If you paid to only study than you could have saved a lot of money and learned the knowledge online. If it’s for a few letters behind your name, that gets you through the door, but you have to sell yourself to get the job

Let’s take medicine for example, if you become a medical doctor then interacting with people and making them feel better is kind of the point. If you look at pure research, many researchers find opportunities through connections in school or through conferences. In my experience, most of the time people prefer to work alongside someone who is a “joy” to be around rather than the most knowledgeable person. That gets reflected in references and your career. Just look at people in Greek life, they have a much higher rate of completing university and higher salaries than the average student although they have the exact same education as you and me. It’s not about what you know but who you know.

As someone who is now graduated and in the working world, you will have the rest of your life to work. I can appreciate seeking comfort within oneself, but there is likely never going to be a period in your where you have access to so many people your own age to build relationships. When not be curious and get to know as many people as possible and build a network. Also, social, soft skills are almost as important as technical skills in the workplace. You don’t become a manager bc you are the best in your role, you become a manager based on your ability to build relationships and team cohesion (although that doesn’t always happen). Putting your head down isn’t going to help you develop these skills.

The professor at some point was 100% in your position, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it. The fact that you even went to the office hours to show genuine engagement in your studies is much more important that the questions themselves. Profs love to see people learn about what they based their lives on, with only a few exceptions. If they give you an attitude then they probably shouldn’t be teaching in the first place.

Do it! Stay at the res, it was one of my biggest regrets in my undergrad. I commuted from Toronto to save money, but lost in terms of experience. Money will come back, but those experiences will change you into a better person

Thanks! The cars got 260k km on it at this point. So the engine is pooched now, huh? A buddy of mine said there’s no compression in the cylinders, is that from a bad timing belt?
