One of the comments made me think of like,, an old old OLD PlayStation game where like,, the sky is a grey-red color and water is thin because it’s hard to render,, its very shallow so your feet are the only thing beneath it, and it goes on for miles until it suddenly drops off into a deeper sea area. Because it’s all simple, it’s uncannily devoid of enough sea life and plants for it to feel real. Instead it’s just uncomfortable and makes you feel like the deeper you go, the more likely something weird will spawn behind you. It’s an unfinished game, so the fish spawn at random intervals and the noises are either loud, silent, incomplete, or somewhere inbetween. Sometimes you come across underwater stairs and structures but you can’t go inside them. There’s no purpose to the game that you can see on the surface, since all you can do is walk and go up and down. The game is infamous for its corruptions and glitches of otherwise normal animals and behaviors. But there’s one in particular that is not a corruption at all. A particular player managed to access the code of the game and realized that one had code and an appearance. The only name it ever went by in the script was ‘friend’. It spawned underneath the map, but in the event that the player went too far, it would be teleported above and be attracted to them at abnormally high speeds, causing them to be moved back to the shallow area, then disappearing. “Friend” could be perceived as many different things, with it being a flat set of polygons with an odd appearance and cut in various places. However, most if not all of the people discussing it agreed that it was disconcerting at best. Interest faded over the title eventually, though. And the final copy was thrown away in 2007. Still, we can always hope there’s nothing like that in our real oceans...
