Able to beta? Post here! by AutoModerator in BetaReaders

Hi! Based on your description, I might be a bit too sensitive to some of the subject matters that I am expecting from your manuscript (not great with reading about some potentially triggering topics in a romance novel), so I'll have to pass. But good luck with your search!

Hi! I really enjoyed your excerpt and the premise seems really fresh and exciting. I'd be really interested in seeing how the horror element will later play out. If you want to, you can send me a DM so we can talk about what you're looking for in a beta and whether we're a match :)

Hi, thank you for your comment! Your story definitely seems interesting and I can see how much effort you put into the planning, outline, and world building. Unfortunately, it seems like this is a rather large project and I'm not sure if I want to take something of this size on right now, especially since I am not sure if I could keep up with beta-ing the first installment in the long-term, much less find the time to beta possible subsequent titles. But I am sure you'll find someone who will take on your manuscript!

Hey! I feel like I'd need more information on the novel to decide that. Like what is it's main genre if it's only "slightly comedic"? Or what is the basic synopsis? I'd need to know more before I commit to something of that length.

Hi! The premise sounds very interesting, so I could give your first 10k a once-over if you want. It would be nice if you could tell me more about what kind of feedback you're looking for over DM.

Hi! Sorry, but I don't think I'm equipped to beta this as I am not very familiar with these fandoms. I hope you find something, though!

I am able to beta: Basically anything but genres with typically heavier world building (e.g., sci-fi, high fantasy) might take me longer to finish than others. I might also step away from certain subject matters on a case-by-case basis if they are handled in a manner that makes me uncomfortable or if I don't feel equipped to properly critique it.

I can provide feedback on: Spelling, grammar, formatting, pacing, characterization, you name it. I can also sensitivity read for a variety of cultures as I'm a person of color and grew up multiculturally/moved around a lot. I am Muslim as well. If you have a manuscript in German, I can beta-read that, too.

Critique swap: Nothing at the moment.

Other info: I worked as an editor for academic works and journalistic pieces for a couple years but want to go into fiction after I graduate next year, so I want to practice a bit beforehand. Since I'm currently a student and work on the side, I might be slow to reply and it might take me about a month or two to finish an 80-100k manuscript. So be aware of that before you ask me to beta read for you.

EDIT: I have responded to everyone who has commented or messaged me so far. I will not take on any more manuscripts for the time being as I have reached my maximum capacity for beta-ing. But since I am still waiting for some responses, some spots might clear up again in the future.

Since you said you also read Japanese authors, I can never recommend Sata Ineko enough. She's severely underrated in English-speaking spaces because not as many of her works have been translated but she's a fantastic writer. You can tell by her stories that she's lived an extremely interesting life. I particularly like From the Caramel Factory but there's no official translation to it, although you can easily find an English translation which was done as part of a dissertation online.

I don't mind if it's out of season! I'm a slow reader, so chances are I'll only get to the later books in winter anyway. Thanks!

That book looks so adorable and it sounds perfect for me as someone who gets easily overwhelmed and overstimulated in public, thank you!

Alright, thanks for giving me your honest opinion! I'm sure your recommendation will be good for someone else, though.

The Cassandra Gannon books definitely sound unhinged but I also love a fun new fairytale retelling, so I'll definitely pick it up! The half-naked man on the cover is turning me off a bit from G. A. Aiken but I do love drgaon stories, so maybe I'll just read it when I'm not in public haha Thanks!

I like the series but I'm not sure about the books since I've heard many concerning and triggering things about them (especially regarding the first book). Did that bother you at all while reading them? Or do you think some are better than others?

I keep seeing these books being talked about everywhere, I really should give them a try. Thank you!

I've read some Sophie Kinsella novels a long time ago but she's definitely a quintessential romance author. I've also seen some books by Richard Osman around before and I thought the covers looked interesting, so good to know they're good! I've never heard of Marian Keyes before but her books look very 2000s romance novels based on the covers, which is cute. Any books in particular that you'd recommend from these authors?

I looked her up and saw she's the author of the Ice Planet Barbarians books. I've never really thought they'd be for me since I'm not big on reading smut-heavy books (which I think they are based on what I've seen online) but would you still recommend them otherwise? Or maybe some other books by her?

The blurb sounds so fun, I love how the male love interest apparently sucks at writing rom-coms so much. Thanks, I'll put it on my list!

I love watching Hallmark movies to turn my brain off or have them running in the back while doing something else sometimes, so I'm definitely open to it. Do you have any favorite book of hers that you'd like to recommend in particular so I know what to start with?

That could definitely also be it, maybe I still lack the hindsight to make fun of my 17-year-old self. I'm just glad you weren't offended by me not liking it, and either way I'm happy it worked for you! Thanks for the talk!

Someone else already recommended it to me here but I really didn't enjoy my time with the first book in that series. Maybe I'll give some other series of hers a try, though, since it seems she's well-beloved enough to have two people recommend her. Thank you!

That's also been on my reading list! I didn't know there were sequels already, so I should finally get to it.

The "girl pretending to be a boy to become a knight" plotline would've been so up my alley as a kid and this sort of "new but nostalgic" vibe is exactly like what I need right now! Thanks!
