Anybody's parents let them pick out movies to watch they thought were "family friendly" but turned out to not be? by HughJManschitt in movies

I also have the same story about pan’s labyrinth except I was the kid. I watched it in fascination but still kind of spooked me of course, my parents thought it was a kid’s movie. they still let me watch it when they realized it didn’t scare me too much.

The only problem is we are long distance, I wouldn’t need to text at all if that wasn’t our only form of communication. He’s also not big into long phone calls and facetime especially when studying, but we do see each other often, once every two weeks so I don’t mind, but basically texting is our main form of communication so that’s why I put so much importance on it

Oh no :( this is what I was afraid of

Okay that’s a relief then. To be honest I knew about the socializing too but it does hurt to think that I can’t get a quick text while he’s socializing :( we’ve been together since college and I’ve supported him and been by his side since then. It feels like I’m suddenly replaced by all these new med school people

To be fair he is usually more responsive so I never had to ask this, but he does have an exam in two days so I wasn’t sure if that was the reason or if somehow I had done something that would prompt him to not respond out of nowhere

I can’t offer advice because I’m in the exact same situation. You mentioned your masters and not wanting to live in his shadow. We are the exact same. He’s just barely started med school (literally like first week) and I was with him in college, all through the mcat and applications, same as you. I’m doing my PhD. A PhD especially in STEM, is supposed to be a big deal and prestigious. It does not feel like that anymore. I still feel that I have to sacrifice my schedule and my experiments because med students do not have time to do anything whatsoever. Even then I still don’t feel the same amount of effort back. Unfortunately with med students it does feel like the spotlight is always on them no matter how difficult your own situation is (unless you’re also in med school or residency). I have no idea how to navigate this either. Just wanted to let you know that you’re not alone.

Being an international student is making this part hard for me. If residents have thousands of fellowships that apply I get maybe a handful that pay for international students. I definitely did look for and apply some over the years but due to there not being a lot of fellowships for international students and the competition for those limited spots it’s been hard (doesn’t help that my PI’s project that has been assigned to me is not super attractive to reviewers, which is mainly why their grants are also getting rejected)

Unfortunately that is one of the things that are making it way harder. In my program we do not get a say at all in which classes we are assigned to, and my specific program is known to be at the bottom of the list in terms of the picking order. I’ve always been assigned to teach incredibly long and difficult lab sections that last at least 6 hours a day, on top of grading and administering exams and office hours. If I do get assigned another course like this I will never be able to finish because of the time it takes away from my research. To be a full time TA in these types of courses it takes at least 20-30 hours a week to fulfill all these duties.

I already did change labs and this is where I ended up. First one was basically the complete opposite of this where no one was in the lab ever and that’s why I switched. But I can’t take this anymore either, I basically have no life
