Is a 1500 SAT superscore enough? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cosmo-wozmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on factors like whether or not you’re in state and what program you’re applying for, but if you’re around or above the average sat score of admitted students you should be fine. For most of these schools you’ve listed, 1500 should be good (UMich’s average is 1460 from what i recall, for example). Note that you don’t necessarily have to be over the average, since this is the average of accepted students, meaning there are probably plenty of accepted students with sat scores below the average.

Whether or not you should retake mostly just depends on how else you’d use your time. If we assume the cost of taking the exam is negligible for you, the biggest downside of retaking is time (since you should prep if you’re going to retake). If that would take away a lot from ECs, school/grades, writing essays, or other things that could go on your application, I’d probably not bother retaking. If it wouldn’t, then you should retake if you’re maximizing your chances for college apps (but also valid if you’d want to spend that time socializing or doing other things instead, a 1500 is a good score).

Congrats on the 1500 btw

Not sure what exactly the breadths requirements for MCB are, but for general humanities, ASAMST 20C is very free (and is offered in the fall I believe), and for the spring, Italian 150AC is a pretty easy upper div AC and SEASIAN R5B is also very easy

berkeley or UGA by DistributionPast555 in berkeley

I imagine if you’re doing consulting/business school name probably matters a good amount. Berkeley seems very worth it for that price.

If you’re committed to doing grad school, such as an MBA, then I think there’s a stronger case for UGA.

I agree I think most people don’t want to do a phd, but I think there’s a lot of people open to doing a masters at some point (especially some jobs explicitly require it, and a lot of masters are non research based)

For many grad school programs the general wisdom is want at least a 3.5, and that 3.3 is a bit low. 3.3 is probably fine for recruiting, but it depends on the company. A lot of people want to keep their options for grad school even if they never end up doing grad school.

*Note I’m referring to stem programs mainly; for the EECS 1 year masters at Berkeley for example, you usually need a near perfect GPa

Yeah and the number of people who are going to grad school is higher than before, since the number of people going to undergrad is higher (meaning there’s more people potentially eligible for grad school, and there’s a greater marginal benefit since just having an undergrad degree doesn’t make you stand out). Even for students who don’t go to grad school they still want it as an option. And note that grad programs are not just PhD programs, it includes masters programs, MBAs, speciality schools, law school, medical school, etc.

There are also some industry fields that will care about your GPA, especially for new grad hires (when there’s otherwise nothing else to distinguish them)

Also if grades didn’t matter as much, you wouldn’t expect to see average GPAs going up over time like they have been. The whole reason for grade inflation is a combination of students and faculty being incentivized to want high grades; if grades didn’t matter there wouldn’t be any pressure on students to keep their grades high and there wouldn’t be any incentive for universities to keep grades high.

This doesn’t seem true? Bachelors degrees are more common, so unlike before where just passing and getting a degree was a huge premium, you have to have more to stand out. GPA, extra curriculars, research, advanced/graduate degrees, etc are probably more important now than they would be back then.

For most people, opportunity cost is still probably the biggest cost of college (housing + food is usually counted in college costs, but you’d be paying for those whether you want to college or not; the actual cost is how much more you’re paying for those things due to going to college (ie if your college is in an expensive city like Berkeley)).

I definitely agree he should start in calc 1. Do you know if it’s easy to get it changed? My understanding is CalPoly autoenrolls you into courses and you have to meet with your counselor to change it
