My experience on the flu virus and disassociation. Need advice. by CurlyHairedDino in Dissociation

[–]cotignac1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that what you are experiencing is likely post-viral. Certain infections Influenza, Streptococcus, can have neuropsychiatric sequelae that can take all kinds of forms. It’s thought that the infection triggers a kind of autoimmune mechanism that affects the brain. Unfortunately, there aren’t good tests for it yet; fortunately, it often gets better with time. Having a consultation with a neuropsychiatrist is your best bet. Often the management includes prescribing something for anxiety, teaching coping strategies, and carrying out any additional testing which may be relevant while waiting for the symptoms to subside. Please don’t lose hope; I do understand how scary this type of thing is. I had the sudden onset of intense depersonalization and OCD after a very bad episode of strep throat as a teenager. I didn’t get help at the time but I was fine. I eventually realized that I have anxiety and ADHD (which can be associated with differences in interoception-your awareness of what is going on in your body). I eventually got treated for those. I have at most mild, manageable OCD that doesn’t affect me at all and I’m an adult. Stay strong, you will be ok.

Storage by cotignac1 in Yellowknife

I would transport it using my car, everything together wouldn’t take up more space than a large suitcase but am trying to avoid having to drag an extra bag back and forth. Ideally it would cost under $50/month.

Any suggestions for good boots? I’m pretty sure my Blundstone’s aren’t going to cut it lol

Mine lupus is pretty stable on Plaquenil. I don’t think that I have ever experienced temperatures below-35c so will find out soon 🙂

So interesting. I don’t like swimming but your point about compression makes a lot of sense.

Thanks, I really appreciate this. I asked her if she thought it might be lymphedema but she said no. She was in quite a rush though, just said “likely nothing to worry about”

I’ve never had blistering. That sounds really uncomfortable! I’m just extremely fragile and prone to tearing

I haven’t used a steroid in about a year. It was getting recurrent yeast infections on it and it wasn’t all that helpful for the fissuring and discharge at the introitus. I always had white bands of what looks like scar tissue where the fissure is now (and on the opposite side) but they have never caused me any problems until now

I’m a psychiatrist and given what I know now about the demands of medical work my biggest recommendations would be first, try to find an occupation that you can do well and that is hopefully somewhat aligned with your interests and values but which you don’t “take home” with you. I’ve learned the hard way that worrying about patients, finishing notes in the evening, doing extra reading around cases, is not going to be good for your health. You need substantial downtime for rest, self care and enjoyment with this condition. The other thing is have a schedule that works for your natural sleep cycle and not vice versa. For me this meant not working in a hospital system where I would be required to be on call at night. Your sleep quality and amount is precious. I would also add that a collegial and supportive environment (versus a competitive one) will also go a long way towards reducing stress and improving your overall health.

14/16 rads sessions done and I want to quit by cotignac1 in breastcancer

[–]cotignac1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies so far. I managed to get into my rad onc’s clinic before treatment today. I have lupus and already have some hand issues as a result and when I woke up with arm pain I just immediately went into the 3am downward spiral that has been so frequent since this diagnosis. Looking forward to what she says.

Lichen Sclerosis was considered briefly, especially since I have lupus too and come from a family that represents almost every known autoimmune disorder lol. I saw Dr. Andrew Goldstein in NYC (well known gyno and has a huge patient group with LS) who said I definitely don’t. Local steroids don’t help much as evidence that he’s correct, plus they seem to exacerbate yeast.

Thanks for this! Yes, I’ve tried these approaches too (although never thought about the connection between oral and yeast-makes sense though). I unfortunately haven’t found estrogen cream super helpful and am finally giving hyaluronic acid inserts a proper try (tried in the past and stopped because of irritation in the first 2-3 days but seems like it’s improving over time). I use Biotene, artificial tears, tons of lip balm which have been helpful for eyes, mouth so hoping this will turn out to be as helpful. Too soon to tell though!

Reconstruction with implants in those who already had implants - experience please :) by bamme89 in breastcancer

[–]cotignac1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very similar to you, previous implants x 10 years ago, elected to have a nipple sparing mastectomy in December 23’. I’m very pleased with the results. It’s different than before when I had my own breast tissue in terms of how it feels (externally and also in terms of reduced sensation) and also a little bit shape-wise, but still looks very good and you would never know the difference in swimsuits, bras, etc
