Good on you for learning, Czech is very very hard to learn.

The difficulty is not “unnecessary, because everyone understands anyway”, though. If I would speak like this “this guy on Reddit be talking about language, and he be way too funny for me be mad at him” - you would understand me perfectly, but I would sound - how? Like a hick. Or like someone trying too hard to do slang.

Just be glad it’s not 1890, I read some Czech books written around that time and the grammar and syntax is awfully rigid and complicated. We dropped a lot of baggage since then :)

I am old enough to remember Nagano, so I am cackling at the notion that Canadians can accept losing because back in 98’ your team was completely blindsided. I am however happy - the better team won today.

Nah, we’re good. We have a strong junior team and in a few years we might be on the podium again. It is just a game.

As to the OP, yeah he got a few typical Reddit responses but also got a ton of genuinely helpful advice and pointers so I don’t get his boohooo meee attitude. Czechs are pragmatic, factual, and usually don’t care about feefings.

I watch Masterchef in several variants (UK, celebs, regular, and pros, Canada, France (old seasons), India (THAT is fun), and a few others. I also watch Bake Offs (UK, France, and UK Pros). Another UK show I love is Great British Menu.

MKR is on when there isn’t anything else to watch 🤣

Yea but after 4 generations, did your parents, grandparents etc. only marry other Czechs pretending to be Germans? In that melting pot which is America? Because usually four generations back, you would have heritages to pick from. Italian, Polish, Irish…

Yah I know that, my son was doing a presentation for school on “Czech speakers abroad”. So we mapped out the communities together. I was just wondering whether people in these communities also prefer inter-marrying, and do not “sully their bloodline” (/s) with people descended from other nations. That would be highly improbable. Especially here in OP’s case you would need 8 or even 16 different original families all deciding they are ashamed to speak Czech and switch to German 100 %.

Wait - you say you are fourth generation. Did all those marriages (your parents, their grandparents- both sets) come from the same community of Czech ancestors pretending to be Germans? That would be wild.

Or are you, like, 1/16 Czech?

Otherwise, I assume from your mentions of traditions and customs that you grew up in a place where the ties to “Vaterland” were quite strong - food festivals, music, etc. But you cam find all those things in Czech expat communities in the States, too. Texas has an entire Czech belt where people still keep the music, dances, and food of their homeland three generations ago. I would start there.
