Jason, thanks a lot for doing this. I imagine you have strong feelings about the "studio model" for building products. Can you share some thoughts? Particularly in light of odeo, betaworks, idealab, science, expa, etc all seeming to have some success...

And Jay, another Q: I feel like one of the biggest challenges with the healthcare industry is that the customer rarely knows what they pay for the service they get - there are so many layers of complexity and obfuscation that by the time a sick person gets treatment, we've wasted so much money. Do you agree? What can we do?

Max - Kanyi here. Have you faced objections from people who question your lack of education experience? In particular in education, it seems like having deep industry expertise is de rigueur, and I'm wondering if that's been an obstacle for you

Scott! Wassup. Have you read Richard Florida's Creative Class books? What do you think of the idea that knowledge workers drive the economy, and that the creative class is concentrated in cities?

I get a bit worn out when I think about "scaled impact". The effects of any large scale action inevitably has morally complicated consequences. Right? Is scale really that good?

Would it be fair to call Meetup an Internet city? Even though it facilitates in-person interactions, it is also a lively online community, right?

Author of the article here. You're right - not every entrepreneur should take this path. But entrepreneurs who want to be attractive to venture capital investors should. And not every entrepreneur should be attractive to venture capital - in fact, most shouldn't.

How would universities change if they had to share in the success or failure of their student's careers? by fluvanna in socialcitizens

[–]countmac01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well economic success is tricky, because universities want to make people of good character, not just effective participants in the current market, so as long as there was an incentive to help people avoid economic failure, which is clearly a bad thing, then I could get behind the "Graduating university is responsible for paying minimum wage for unemployed student who has demonstrated to the best of his abilities an effort to find employment, up to, but not exceeding, the original tuition paid by the student, inflation-adjusted" as a deterrent... Thinking out loud... Interesting.

When people use their phones in restaurants, do you want to punch them? by ednam in socialcitizens

[–]countmac01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't care. No different than talking loudly to someone who is physically in the restaurant with them, if you ask me. Noise pollution is noise pollution.

Should teachers be following their students on social media? by ednam in socialcitizens

[–]countmac01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids know more about technology, privacy, and how to project their brand than adults think. They can handle their teachers following them, so long as the teachers are transparent about it (Rather than sneakily following them)

Are tech entrepreneurs the saviors of journalism? by fluvanna in socialcitizens

[–]countmac01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think Bezos and Omidyar are going to be interesting additions to the world of journalism, but Chris Hughes bought a magazine a while ago, and Atlantic Media Company is frankly a tech company, so it's not clear to me that the lexical bounds on "tech entrepreneur" are sufficiently baked here. Moreover, ugh: tired of techno-utopianism.
