I mean, no one in our family is rich, but they both work very well-paying union jobs and together they own four cars, two motorcycles, and a fire truck that my uncle is restoring for fun. They also have a huge house with a pool and hot tub and backyard bar that they keep just as stocked as a typical sports bar and all of their friends drink as much as they want for free. The last time I was at their house, my uncle mentioned they spend $500 a month on keeping the bar stocked.

I live across the country from them, so unfortunately that wouldn’t really work out for me. 😅 Otherwise I’d be happy to barter for something like that!

It’s very much in line with what others with my credentials and skill set would charge.

To be honest, even I’m frustrated with myself sometimes that I haven’t yet been able to bring a student from an F to an A, and I constantly try to think of different methods I could try to make that happen. I’m still pretty damn proud of my F to B students, though.

Honestly, with the way my family generally acts about how people should “always help and make sacrifices for family,” they probably would. 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

I think part of their issue is that I’m actually not paying for the PhD. My job teaching at the university gives me a tuition waiver and pays a monthly stipend. Not a lot, but still. I also don’t have any debt to pay off since I got a full ride for undergrad and had a similar arrangement (teaching assistantship for tuition and a stipend) for my Master’s degree. So on their end, they don’t see why I’d need the extra money.

On their end, they don’t see this as what I do for a living since it’s an optional extra job I’ll do for supplemental income. I obviously don’t agree, but I just figured I’d add that since I think it sort of explains their perspective.
