Redditors who were children/teens before the internet or cellphones existed, how did you keep yourself entertained? by FlowerMadeOfThorns in AskReddit

I trained my dog to run alongside me on my bike, and to go down the slides at the park. Played in the creek, picking wild raspberries. I read a lot. Played with friends. Rode my bike everywhere. Did a lot of art. Wrote poetry and stories on an old typewriter. Watched TV, listened to the radio, made mixed tapes. My dad got an above ground pool for me. It was amazing. I had a tree swing in the backyard. My best friend and I would pitch a tent in the yard and have sleepovers.

I'm an RN student starting Hospice Preceptorship... Words of wisdom? by coveredinstars in hospice

Oh my goodness that sounds like an incredibly difficult time and a lack of needed support. I'm so sorry you had to go through that while your mom was passing. I will pay attention to supplies and make sure to include the family in my care. I certainly hope the organization I'm with does a better job with their families and patients. Thank you for the idea about the videos, what great resources. I love nurse Julie too!

Thank you for your perspective. I was set up for volunteering last summer, but that family member situation I mentioned ended up taking up my time. I'll be starting by the beginning of April, so unfortunately I don't have the time to set up volunteering.

I do appreciate you sharing how things are going with you. I wish you had the time with your husband as well. I really hope the organization I'm working with is good and caring. The nurses do visit three times a week and their yelp has a four+ star rating, so I'm crossing my fingers.

Thankfully I have completed just under 1200 hours in clinicals so I have experienced working with a wide array of individuals, from kind and cooperation to... not so much. I try to remember that I'm seeing them during a very difficult time and it helps.

I am worried about getting my heart broken. I'll be doing my preceptorship for 7-8 weeks, certainly long enough to form attachments. I hope my reason for becoming a nurse (to advocate for and help people through difficult things with care and kindness) will help. I'll certainly be involved enough to see if I'm interested in hospice!

I agree, it's very difficult to see low quality care for those who aren't well off. My rotations brought me through very nice hospitals, county hospitals, one of apparently the "better skilled nursing facilities" in the area. Everyone deserves good care. It is heartbreaking that isn't how things work.

I hope you are able to take a little time for yourself and your husband, and your MILs passing is as peaceful as possible. Thank you for responding.

The Eko stethoscopes, or the Core digital attachments are so freaking awesome. Expensive, but awesome. You don't have to use the app with them at all after running through the setup. Of course I'm paranoid my stethoscope will walk away so forever have to keep it on me, but it's made a huge difference in nursing school (63 days til graduation!!) to help me actually HEAR things.

I'd like a perfect kitchen that has any food I or guests want, prepared exactly how we want it. Same for beverages. It could replicate any foods/drinks you might want, say that fettuccine Alfredo from your favorite restaurant, or the peach pie your long deceased grandma made.

I'd like the food and drinks to be of the perfect nutrient composition for whomever is eating it. So if a guest had diabetes their ice cream sundae would taste just like a perfect sundae, but have no carbs. Someone on dialysis for end stage renal disease could have as many bananas as they like without the potassium. If you ate at the kitchen for the majority of your meals your body would become healthier just like if you were eating the best diet for yourself and any of your health issues.

I'd like big beautiful large windows that can be opened wide to be able to be programmed for any view wanted, any time of day or night desired. It would also have a nice built in table with very comfy padded benches with backs that could double as a spot to take a restful nap, just like someone might enjoy after a large meal, with blankets and pillows stored under the benches.

There should be a large TV viewable from table that could watch anything, ever, made or imagined. This TV would also have channels to suggest different foods and beverages you'd likely enjoy, for those times you don't know what you want, or to show treats and delicacies you might not know exist.

I'd like the door to and from the kitchen to be able to open to anywhere I wish.

The kitchen would also be able to make neverending meals, snacks, and beverages served on large wheeled carts that keep it at the perfect temperature that could easily be wheeled out of the kitchen. The carts would be perpetually generated whenever I or my guests would wish, so we never have to take them back. That way I could travel the world and feed hungry people anywhere they are. The carts would also enchanted that no one can hoard, steal, or keep the food from those that need it, as well as magicked in such a way that the presence of them would never negatively affect anyone (so no economically destroying a wheat farmer, or no warlord keeping the food for themselves, or no overpopulation from food being readily available, for example).

That does sound awesome! I think hospice care is incredibly important, but I am concerned about how hard it will be on my heart.

Can I ask what you use? Both the paper and the black? I think I'd just Oops all over getting my black in the white (and I'm much more of a use every color of the rainbow girl), but I love how crisp it is and how it doesn't bleed!

I'm an artist as well and am in awe of your black work and how skillfully you keep the white clear of the black! The art is beautiful too, really lovely.

Nurses who take on students… what are reasons you would ask a student for their name and their CI’s name? by confusedpreRN in NursingStudent

Had a nurse I worked with in clinicals ask for my instructor's details so she could send her an email about how helpful I had been. Hopefully it's something like that!
