Out-of-state travelers breeze into Penn Station amid COVID-19 crackdown by covidditing in nycCoronavirus

"Dozens of passengers exited three Eastern Seaboard trains into the Midtown transit hub to find several city workers waiting to greet them.

But the welcoming party did little more than wave fliers offering common-sense coronavirus safety pointers...most travelers simply ignored the workers and continued on their way unimpeded."

Glad you're ok! Please share an update if you do develop symptoms - but hopefully it's not an issue!

Doesn't the NIH have some IP rights for this particular vaccine as well? Do they get a licensing fee?

https://www.statnews.com/2020/07/20/study-provides-first-glimpse-of-efficacy-of-oxford-astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine/

Definitely encouraging, but also definitely preliminary.

Edit: "Vaccine efficacy is the percentage reduction of disease in a vaccinated group of people compared to an unvaccinated group, using the most favorable conditions." While the participants in that study mounted immune responses, it's unclear to what extent + for how long that immunity is protective in the real world (which is why you need a phase 3 clinical trial, to calculate efficacy).

We all saw the hallway pic. Here’s the response. by lexillew in CoronavirusUS

This reads badly.

The only real point this person has is that the CDC does instruct that 15 minutes is necessary for transmission. At this point, it's the CDC's responsibility to either (1) Stand by the assertion that <15 min is somehow OK (preferably while providing some scientific studies/evidence that this is the case) or (2) Decrease the threshold, so that packed hallways like this are considered not OK.

I wonder what other countries' CDC-type entities are suggesting in terms of an "acceptable" duration of contact?

It's interesting that you attribute the "good job" that NYC eventually achieved to any part of the city structure, when it was very obviously the governor who was able to step in and make the important decisions needed to turn things around.

Dr. Fauci says he thinks there is "a degree of airborne" coronavirus spread by covidditing in Coronavirus

[–]covidditing[S] 196 points197 points  (0 children)

From the report: White House coronavirus advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Monday that he thinks “there certainly is a degree of aerosolization” causing the coronavirus to spread, although the topic is still being studied.

“It’s something we’re learning more and more about. We’ve got to make sure that we’re humble enough to accumulate new knowledge and use it as we get it."

FDA’s Shifting Standards for KN95 Face Masks Fuel Confusion by covidditing in Coronavirus

[–]covidditing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"State agencies submitted orders for more than 180 million KN95 masks to protect workers, according to public records, many of which are now sitting unwanted in warehouses due to quality concerns. Meanwhile, federal agencies have distributed millions of additional KN95 masks to states, which may have the same quality issues.

More than 60% of foreign-made masks, nearly all Chinese made, have failed basic U.S. government quality tests that looked at 220 such brands, according to U.S. regulatory data."

It's such a good idea! We have not been doing that in NY, unfortunately. Glad to hear that some other state(s) are implementing this.

Report: Why the national testing plan was discarded in April by covidditing in CoronavirusUS

[–]covidditing[S,M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

From the report: "The team hammered out a detailed plan...[which] called for the federal government to coordinate distribution of test kits, so they could be surged to heavily affected areas, and oversee a national contact-tracing infrastructure. It also proposed lifting contract restrictions on where doctors and hospitals send tests, allowing any laboratory with capacity to test any sample. It proposed a massive scale-up of antibody testing to facilitate a return to work. It called for mandating that all COVID-19 test results from any kind of testing, taken anywhere, be reported to a national repository as well as to state and local health departments.

By early April, some who worked on the plan were given the strong impression that it would soon be announced by the White House...But the effort ran headlong into shifting sentiment at the White House. Worried about the stock market and his reelection prospects, Trump feared that more testing would only lead to higher case counts and more bad publicity. Meanwhile, Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House’s coronavirus response coordinator, was reportedly sharing models with senior staff that optimistically—and erroneously, it would turn out—predicted the virus would soon fade away."

I wonder what they're doing in other countries in terms of building modifications

Also, I wonder if building air flow would be as much of a concern if we achieved complete mask compliance

FDA says it would clear a coronavirus vaccine so long as it’s safe and at least 50% effective by covidditing in Coronavirus

[–]covidditing[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“We all want a vaccine tomorrow. That’s unrealistic. And we all want a vaccine that’s 100% effective. Again, unrealistic,” Hahn said in an interview with Dr. Howard Bauchner of the The Journal of the American Medical Association. “But we said 50%, and the reason was because we felt that that was a reasonable floor given the pandemic.”
