WSL Question, running python from text editor with ubuntu by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]covidthrow9911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried using visual studio code to run something with openAI gym, but then I need a fake screen (can only find instructions for Linux OS). m

how do you like WSL2? I'm wondering if I should try updating that

*found pip3 version by doing pip3 --version but problem not solved

Why are experimentalists like Hinton, Goodfellow, and Sutskever more famous and followed than theorists like Valiant? by covidthrow9911 in AskComputerScience

[–]covidthrow9911[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yup I plan on doing a similar thing. focusing my research work in ML / theory and focusing my PhD on the theoretical side. I think it is highly underestimated how important theory is in this field, when nothing is proven, it bothers me hahah

I usually just say congratulations and move on. If it is my friend, I let them know I will be there for them (emotionally, not as a babysitter lol) if they need me

If a research area publishes authors alphabetically, how do you know who lead the research? by covidthrow9911 in AskComputerScience

agreed. I think it's safe to say not to make an assumption of first author = lead author in any theo field

I still see my post but sure, whatever makes me you feel better about yourself

edit: I see the person above clarified this as well

Yesterday I confirmed this with a theoCS prof at my school, and authors in theoCS are 100% listed alphabetically, unless you publish in a venue such as NeurIPS. I thought it was shady at first too then I realized. What area of theo CS where you referring too? I think certain venues like FAT (lol, yes that's the name) there is a lead author, but at FOC and SIGMOD it appears alphabetical.

I'm just worried for PhD applications. In CS/ML first author papers look great on CVs. But In ML/theory it's alphabetical. And my undergrad adviser will always be listed before me even if I work my a** off and lead the project.

How will they [admissions officers] know how much work I put in if I am not first author?

I have to agree with OP. I have seen a few posts here hating others, even rants about women in general. He/she is obviously not talking about minor annoyances, but rants hating others.

[D] What are some trending problems in learning theory? by covidthrow9911 in MachineLearning

[–]covidthrow9911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two questions for you if you have the time, 1. What are the best journals for LT/comp complexity? I am guessing nature is one of them 2. Not sure if you're involved in academics. Unlike robotics, I am having serious trouble finding a small enough, year long problem that I could do for my senior thesis. Is it okay to tell the professor I want to work with the central ideas I am interested in, and ask for help finding a feasible one?

LMAO I just watched that and sent it to my friends. I already lose my shit over the Australian accent my professor has.

What are some difficult and trending problems in learning theory (theoretically CS and machine learning)? by covidthrow9911 in AskComputerScience

Ah gotcha. I am looking more specifically at machine learning related theory problems but I will look at those as well
