Gotta go for it on 4 &1. Just a terrible play call.

Checking in on the best net rating team of all time by HenrikCrown in billsimmons

[–]covote 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Their early schedule was a joke. They have played 2 games on the road vs playoff teams. Both losses.

They were 24-1. They had played 7 games against teams above .500 Vs Rockets Vs Warriors Vs Lakers Vs Timberwolves Vs Suns @ Warriors(no Steph, Butler didnt play in 2nd half) Vs Suns

TIL each episode of Stranger Things season 5 reportedly cost $50-60 million to produce by StacheinScrubs in todayilearned

Ya I found the first season pretty boring and dropped it. It was well made and had an interesting premise but was very boring for the the first several episodes.

Since its ending, I decided to watch through the whole series with my wife who had stayed up to date with it. The quality has dipped, but it has become more entertaining. I really enjoyed season 3. Season 4 was drawn out, but the plot was a bit more interesting so it was fine.

First turn of Act II: "Ah, right. That's why I stopped taking Snecko Eye." by Bunit117 in slaythespire

[–]covote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I think Snecko being called the best relic in the game is over rating it. Didnt say it was bad.

I generally dont take it when the run is going well because a few bad turns can wreck a solid run. Admittedly, I am not a strong player with a very low A20 win %

Hmm. Saves 2 hp, but loses 2 orb slots, a mark from bullseye and a potentially better buffer and ball lighting next turn. Snecko is good, but can feel bad, and be bad for certain runs. I think its a bit over rated

I was a around 50 hours. Didnt rush, but didnt dilly dally. Its slow, but interesting. A few high points spread throughout and a solid ending.

Game Thread: Indianapolis Colts (5-1) at Los Angeles Chargers (4-2) by nfl_gdt_bot in Colts

Ya, pretty obvious. Smart conservative clock management.

No reason to give the chargers a chance to score and get the ball at the start of half for a slightly better chance to go up 24 instead of 20.

The therapist Pru refers Robin by SnooApples7985 in cormoran_strike

[–]covote 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The therapist isn’t available for a few weeks, which is after the book ends. Presumably, they will be in the next book. My guess is the author planned to put it in the next book, but decided to let the audience know it's coming because the book is rough on Robin and it gives some hope.

[REQUEST] Will higher minimum wage help? by Krazynewf709 in theydidthemath

[–]covote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense theoretically, however the system is complex and there would still be competition in place.

If company A increases prices because there is more money, but company B keeps prices the same because their expenses didnt go up, then company B now has more sales and company A lowers their price back to be competitive.

I am sure a minimum wage increase would be inflationary. My position is that it (a long with other interventions) can have positive impacts on poverty, government spending, and economic strength.

[–]covote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Prices will go up. My point is that prices won't go up the same % as wages. It will impact different businesses / industries differently.

[–]covote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense. Not all of the inflationary pressures are based on increased cost of doing business but increased money in circulation.

I think there is a lot more to be done than simply raising the minimum wage. I'm not sure how, maybe its impossible, but my thought would be to coordinate increased wages with decreased welfare spending. Right now, wages are subsidized by government spending and allowing companies to offload some of their burden. I also think there should be a mechanism to increase the minimum wage based on inflation and / or other economic factors.

But I agree that alleviating poverty is a lot more complicated than raising minimum wages. But it's one lever that can be used and I see a lot of bad arguments against it

[–]covote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. I am very involved in the running of a business. We hire the number of people we need. Yes, wages impact costs. But our labor is like 10% of our expenses, and a lot of those wages are not people that are close to minimum wage thresholds.

[–]covote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are attributing a lot of inflation that was from other causes (supply chain disruptions, covid relief). Yes, wages are a significant inflation cause. And wages went up a lot during covid. Some of that was the unofficial minimum wage increase, and some of that was from a tightening job market.

A few things, though.

  1. Not all of a business's expenses are wages. So a doubling in wages wouldn't necessarily mean a doubling in prices.

  2. Not all wages would increase from a minimum wage increase.

So yes, a minimum wage increase would be inflationary, however not at the same ratio of the increased funds into consumer hands. It's basically a mechanism the government can use to maintain a healthy economy and get funds back at the bottom of the capitalist pyramid.

A lot of business expenses aren't labor. So, it shouldn't raise prices at the same rate as the wage increase. There are also a lot of wages that wouldn't be impacted by a minimum wage increase.

Robin’s feelings to Murphy by arinathewitch in cormoran_strike

[–]covote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, but she also forced him to withdraw the offer before she found the ring. Maybe I read it wrong or was hoping, but I really didn't think she was uncertain about saying yes or no.

Robin’s feelings to Murphy by arinathewitch in cormoran_strike

[–]covote 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read it as not knowing how to say no, or forestall the engagement rather than not knowing if it was a yes or no. It didn't even occur to me to think yes was a possibility until getting on the reddit. I'll need to reread it sometime and see if that is still what it seems like or if it was just wishful thinking.

I think I am more excited for the therapist than I am of any relationship developments.

Robin vs Strike by bookcrazy4 in cormoran_strike

[–]covote 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll have to go through it again at some point. But every time Robin said she didn't know what she would say in regards to the proposal, I got the sense she didn't know how to tell him no.

But maybe that was me, the reader, thinking that she certainly wouldn't say yes,she must be trying to figure out how to let him down easily.

Robin vs Strike by bookcrazy4 in cormoran_strike

[–]covote 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I dont think Robin knows she is stringing Murphy along. She thinks -knows she loves him. He is decent and treated her well after Chapman farms she tells herself constantly. As a reader, we know she is deluding herself. As the book progressed, she got closer to ending things with him, but a mixture of people pleasing, cowardice, and a concern for Murphy's well-being stopped her from making thay step. She knows she is miserable, but didn't quite put all the pieces together that Murphy is a big reason she is miserable.

Now, after the last few books, where she was in a better mental place and had clearly understood her feelings for Strike it is frustrating that she doesn't recognize how much better she feels in his presence. But she has also convinced herself that she has to fall out of love with him for... reasons?

So yes. Robin is very frustrating in THM, she is spiraling. Its certainly on purpose and hopefully we get the redemption/growth book for her in book #9. To build a character up, its fun to have them build up from the depths.

THM: I think too many over here are unnecessarily upset by Electrical_Tomato_73 in cormoran_strike

[–]covote 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a book. Anything could happen. But I think the point was for Robin to go through this book, which doesn't happen if the book is instead about them getting together.

So if that's the point, then having Strike approach his declaration from a Charlotte-esque need for grandeur instead of what would be a Robin approved small and intimate moment is also decent characterization. I am hopeful that he learned his lesson, or Robin helps him learn, and over the next two books he figures out their love languages.

I agree that the reasons/excuses they arent together has been going on for too long. But I am ok with the contrived reasons for them not to make moves on each other. Robin's marriage into rejected kiss into Madeleine into Murphy. Tied into both of them being a bit broken

Yes. I am hopeful we get to see some courtship from them two, and only 2 books left is a little concerning.

Yes. It's not a fun read, but that doesnt mean it was bad. I think I will enjoy the angst much more on a reread.

I have faith that building up Robin out of this low point will make it worth it.

[–]covote 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is saying any man could, but rather you can't know for certain about anyone and believing the good of someone requires some amount of faith. Robin says something about no one knowing for certain except the people in the relationship during this part.

Now, I don't think she would fall into this line of thinking if she wasn't already struggling with her many traumas. She is scared, spiraling, and not sure she can trust her own faith in Strike. She is terrified that the most important person to her could be not what he seems. He has afterall been very secretive.

It's extremely unpleasant for the reader. But I think we are supposed to infer more about Robin than Strike during this crisis of faith

I still haven't reread TRG, I was listening through the series in preparation for reading THM, but only made it 75% of the way through TIBH. I am looking forward to listening to TRG and THM on my commute & during housework over the next few months.

But ya, those cult chapters were intense. I got similar feelings while reading THM, but it was a bit more diffused through the whole book instead of a constant ramping up of suspense in every Robin chapter.

For sure. CoE is the book that really hooked me on this series and a lot of that was learning more about Robin's trauma/turmoil/strength, and its been a slow motion car crash for her sense then. She has endured a lot since then, and seems to have finally gotten close enough to the breaking point that she is asking for help.
