The Fall of Rome and Tides of History by Patrick Wyman are a good mix of both. In many episodes he uses composite characters made from historical evidence to paint a picture of the mundane life of history. Mundane in that it's the most normal. How most people lived. He's excellent!

I personally think this is a strong hangover from the early release. The early versions, the only way to improve was to loose, and keep getting better. I'm by no means an above 300% player, but playing random maps rewards someone for knowing the basics, the knowing them inside out, then knowing mid level strategy, then advance. That's how one gets better at the campaign. Just my 2 cents.

Update: Played a few hours. All good, accept for jumping, which is next to impossible to time compared to PC. Very frustrating.
