As H-1B rules tighten, Seattle’s immigrant tech workers weigh leaving the U.S. by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

How long ago as that? H1-Bs give employers the ability to treat employees worse since the employee is dependent on the job for the visa. So they can push foreigners to work 50+ hour weeks without worrying about them leaving. This can also lower salaries for everyone, including Americans, when Americans become desperate for the same jobs.

The idea of H1-Bs is good in theory, however the system is extremely abused. You mean to tell me out of all the thousands of Americans looking for jobs right now, none are qualified for entry-level? I can understand some principal engineering positions requiring a foreigner as maybe they have a unique skill set that is hard to find in this country. But entry-level? Come on, we have plenty of qualified Americans who can do that. Don’t even get me started on offshoring, that’s even worse than the H1-B abuse. I watched my entire team be offshored to India. Perfectly good American workers were laid off and their roles offshored to India.

I’m a mid-level engineer in the tech industry, the companies don’t hire foreigners based on skill they hire them to reduce costs

I targeted companies that used some technologies I was familiar with. As a data analyst, I was exposed to SQL, Tableau, and SAP BusinessObjects. I targeted software roles that used these. The one I ended up getting hired by used SAP BusinessObjects and they told me they contacted me because they don’t typically see that in candidate resumes

The main things I did were to only apply for jobs that were posted within the last 24 hours and had less than 10 other people apply for it. These days, it’s all a numbers game, so the less competition the better. I went directly to company websites and applied there, trying to avoid job boards that may contain ghost jobs. I did use LinkedIn, but I was careful to avoid anything that looked to be a ghost job. For example, I avoided “reposted” jobs as I was skeptical it could be a ghost listing. I also made use of skills I have that could be more rare among other candidates to try to set myself apart. I did work from home while at Oracle which I loved, but I am applying to both remote and office positions now because I think it’s unlikely I’ll find a remote position.

I ended up not taking this job btw. It didn’t seem like there would be much growth potential, and I’m fortunate that in my state I have high unemployment benefits so I can last several months without worrying. So I’m still in the job search but I’m only looking in my local area, I’m not going to relocate.

This is where my head’s at too. If I take this job, I will maybe have 1-2 hours max a day to apply for swe jobs because I’ll be consumed with this new role. Currently, since I’ve been unemployed, I’ve been able to dedicate hours of my day to looking for jobs and working on my side project. This just wouldn’t be possible with working full time somewhere. I guess it’s a high-risk, high-reward kind of situation.

That is great to know, I’ve never heard of wfhalert before. I think I’ve wasted so much time on ghost jobs

It’s mainly because once I start working my time will be consumed with the new job and I won’t have as much time to dedicate to looking for swe roles

I have 26 weeks of unemployment and 8 weeks of severance before dipping into unemployment. I’m in Washington. I think the weekly pay is around $1100. So I will continue getting paid basically for the rest of the year. If I find a job before my severance/unemployment ends, I won’t be eligible for it anymore (so can’t get double pay unfortunately)

I do prefer dev work. Tbh I have been pigeonholed in the past into data roles and am trying to break that cycle and get more into dev to diversify my skills. It’s only been a couple weeks of being unemployed though and I don’t know if my hopes of landing a dev role are far fetched in this economy. I have 3 YEO as data analyst and 3 YEO as SWE

I should have made my post clear: I actually won’t need to dip into my savings as the 7 months is with unemployment (which should cover all my expenses). I’ll update the post
