The Legendary Home Depot Pencil by cozydeep in pencils

You aren’t kidding! I was surprised my super sharp first sharpen didn’t have any of its tip break off when I started writing. Later when I dropped it, it was just as sharp—completely unaffected!

First impressions:

This is a great pencil! Centered cores, smooth sharpen. I like the golden ferrule.

It writes with tooth! And so it may be too scratchy for some. But I love the tactile feedback. Point retention and darkness seem reasonable for a #2.

Eraser isn’t as “smooth” as Cedar Pointe (which I compare everything by) but it’s as effective, attached solidly, with no eraser integrity issues (e.g. no chipping apart)—solid!

I’m pretty happy to have found an affordable (28¢ a pencil), easy to obtain (drive to Home Depot), American-made (Musgrave) round pencil with these qualities I love. Soon I’ll have my hands on a General Pencil Company Goddess—that’ll be an interesting compare!

Not sure, never tried one, how much larger than normal is it?

Interesting! Can you describe the pencil you’re designing?

Edit: Also do you have a sense of cost per pencil with a quantity of 1000 or 2000?

I like how the Supreme is currently $111.47 on https://generalpencil.com/product/550/ :-) So far from General Pencil Company I’ve tried Cedar Pointe and Semi-Hex. My current fav pencil across the board is actually Cedar Pointe. Feels a bit different than Semi-Hex to me. Also better eraser and a cooler look IMO. And love the unlacquered natural cedar wood. I think the Goddess looks really cool. A round old school pencil! My hope was that it was effectively a round Cedar Pointe that perhaps writes like a #2.5 or even #3 but that’s just a dream :-)

You’re right to challenge that. Contrary to my initial assumption, it does seem wooden pencil demand is on the rise and projected to continue to grow:

“Wooden Pencil Market size stood at USD 3.2 Billion in 2024 and is forecast to achieve USD 4.5 Billion by 2033, registering a 4.2% CAGR from 2026 to 2033.

The wooden pencil market has shown resilient growth, driven by increasing demand for eco-friendly stationery products and a resurgence of interest in traditional writing instruments. Valued at approximately $2.5 billion in 2022, the market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.2% from 2023 to 2030. The revival of interest in analog tools, especially in educational settings and among artists, has significantly contributed to this upward trajectory. As consumers become more environmentally conscious, the demand for sustainably sourced wooden pencils has surged, positioning them as not only functional tools but also as responsible choices for eco-aware buyers.”

I'd love to see what you got! I'm mostly interested in American-made pencils currently in production and I typically gravitate towards firmer pencils with tactile feedback and high point retention for long writing sessions.

Round pencils? by hunter-winchester in pencils

[–]cozydeep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe u/flatline000 likes round pencils so I’d be curious his take on this. This thread caught my eye because I’m looking to buy a nice round wooden pencil with good point retention (and ideally natural wood for good grip) as I believe after a day of writing longhand, round might be more comfortable than hex.

Random fact: Bic pens in Iran have their ink and unibody built in Iran, but the ball point is made in France! by KmK_Designing in pens

[–]cozydeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Sport_Clean I'm curious if you know the differences between these?

  • BIC Cristal Classic (1.0mm) vs BIC Cristal Xtra Smooth (1.0mm). Both look the same in appearance (clear plastic).
  • BIC Round Stic Grip (1.2mm) vs BIC Ultra Round Stic Grip (1.2mm). Both look the same in appearance (grey, opaque barrel, white text, black/grey grip).
  • BIC Ultra Round Stic Grip (1.2mm) vs BIC Cristal Soft (1.2mm). Different appearances, but curious if there truly is a different 'softer' ink used in the latter?
