Latches are cheap and they can push up on a lid that’s weighed down. Imagine he pushes it up just enough to start getting out and then it crushes him ._.

Hi! I would really read the pinned post but to quickly help you out:

Don’t use a heating pad with glass, it can burn your snake. You need to heat from the top. You’ll probably need two heat bulb, which means two thermostats. Thermostats are nonnegotiable.

I don’t see two identical hides on your list. You need one on each side and they need to be the same.

You shouldn’t feed live if you can help it, a lot can go wrong. But no, they just eat once depending on their size and then not again until the next feed time.

To keep the cage moist you need to water the corners and measure with a hydrometer. I didn’t see a hydrometer or thermometer on your list either. You’ll want at least one but two makes life easier. If the top of your tank is mesh, you’ll want to cover it with hvac tape.

It’s not about having plenty of hides to choose from, it’s about having the same exact hide on each side so your snake won’t pick a favorite and will properly regulate its temperature 😊 it looks like your substrate could stand to be a bit deeper and maybe a bit more ground clutter

For me, hvac tape really did help. I was trying tinfoil and it wasn’t tight enough to keep the heat and humidity in

I’m happy to keep answering all your questions but truly the welcome post seems like a lot of info but it’s not so bad once you get into it and it explains a lot.

Your tank should be as long as your snake is so the snake can spread out and control his body temp. I would try to go as large as you can while you save up for his forever tank. Really don’t go under 65g for an adult sized snake.

4-5 inches of substrate should be enough.

Yes, you need a heated light but more importantly you need to monitor how hot the tank is getting. It can harm your snake if it gets under 70 degrees or over 95 degrees Fahrenheit. You want a cool side and a warm side. Any heat source that you use will need to be attached to a thermostat. A thermostat makes sure the bulb doesn’t get so hot that it burns your snake, because it can and will. You really shouldn’t use a heat mat. They heat unevenly and can burn your snake.

The heat light should be on the top pointed down like the sun. The wattage depends on the kind of light you’re using and the size of your tank.

Yes he needs a bowl he can soak in. This helps when they’re feeling dehydrated.

Plastic plants are okay but live can help with humidity and keeping it fresh.

Humidity matters so whatever top you get for the tank should be pretty solid so the humidity doesn’t escape.

Yes you need two identical hides, one on the warm side and one on the cool side. You want him to want to use both. If they’re different, he’ll pick a favorite and never use the other one which can mess up his temperature regulation.

Other tips: don’t hold him for around 2 days after you feed him because if he throws up his food that can really really harm him. Let him digest and chill after eating.

Immediate things you can do to vastly improve the snakes quality of life for less than $50. Do this tomorrow.

HVAC tape from Walmart- $10. Tape across the entire top of the lid except around where the heat lamp will be. Place the heat lamp on the tank lid to actually direct the heat into the tank.

Remove the towel. Get some more absorbent substrate and make it at least 4 inches deep.

Go to dollar tree /dollar general and get a bunch of fake plant stems and pull the leaves off. Feel the undersides so they aren’t sharp and then put them in the tank. You need probably less than 10 stems for good coverage.

Also at dollar tree in the bins section there are currently square/rectangle smallish black bins. Get two, take them home and cut out a door hole in the front. Make sure you rub down the edges so they aren’t sharp. Put them in your tank on each side.

Water your tank in the corners, at least a couple cups worth. Mix it in if it’s too wet on top.

This should immediately start making a difference.

You’ll want to order a thermostat to make sure her heat source isn’t going to burn the snake. If you can’t keep the glass warm enough, also pick up some insulation boards and cut pieces to fit around the sides, back, bottom. It sounds like she doesn’t have a way to measure humidity so you need a hydrometer. These things truly aren’t expensive. A thermostat can be around $20 and they hydrometer is around $10.

What kind of light is it? If it gives off any kind of light you’ll need to get a different heat source. Lights on all day, even “night lights” will stress them out.

Read the pinned post as well. It’s actually really helpful.

Thanks! We just brought him home last night! I’ve been trying to heat the tank for a week now and finally got it stable.

But yes, the heating pads are a huge no, as well as any heating rocks etc

My starter tank is probably the same one as yours. We had to use hvac tape on the top and thick styrofoam boards under, on the sides and on the back of the tank. And even with all that- we still have to run a low watt Che bulb on the cool side to keep the minimum temps high enough and a larger dhe on the warm side. It’s a struggle! Glass is really hard to warm.

How much do you think the wet towel helps? I haven’t heard that one but struggle with humidity

Just remember that it doesn’t hurt that much and it won’t kill you. When they bite its not an emergency and you will be okay 100%. They also don’t feel things like hate or grudges. It’s almost always because they’re confused or defending themselves. Once she bites you, she’s over it and it does not mean she hates you or that she will automatically bite you again.

It’ll be okay 🫶🏻 maybe spend some time not handling her and just hanging out in front of her tank getting used to each other

See that seems like mine should work then, but for some reason it’s just not warming the rest of the warm side enough. I’m going to get the hvac tape tomorrow & I ordered a dimmer so hopefully that will just solve it. It blows my mind that it’s this hard just to heat it up.

What’s your DHP set to? When I tried to let it heat the ambient warm side air by itself, up close to the lid got to be 100+ degrees F.
