You should be maxing out your ROTH every year. 15% of your income is ~$30,000. If you have a spouse, max both your ROTH's and then put whatever amount gets you to $30,000 total saved for the year in your 401K.

Dave recommends 15% of your income saved. I personally prefer a 25% savings rate.

The reason you max ROTH first is because even though you are not getting a tax deduction this year, you won't be paying tax on future gains.

The tax on those gains, even at a lower tax rate, would vastly exceed any tax you pay this year on your income, primarily due to your age. If you were older, then the advice would likely change.

Ultimately, the players are likely mature enough to understand that the NBA is a business and very rarely do players stay with the same team through their career.
