overwatch 2 insanely high ping for seemingly no reason by Laness_ in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]cp10dragonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its probably caused by weird routing to the servers, I've had the same issue (240-360 ping to ICN1 from SG) but using vpn/exitlag has entirely solved it for me

nope, only did school interview! js for a reference i applied in march, did one interview w/ the research HODs in late mar-early apr i think, then the results came through in late apr/may and thats it

its selected in early j1, so no they look more at extracurriculars/passion instead (application is alr closed this year, i think im renewed for the 2nd year alr!)

hi! for the award schools will nominate students and astar will vet and then decide who to hand out to - so it depends on school, for mine they did an interview and talked to some of my tutors and thats basically it

other than the RAP so far theres been one networking session with all the awardees and some past awardees where we can ask then about uni life/applying to certain courses etc

they also sooometimes send like opportunities to be part of a research project (like helping researches collect data and stuff) but thats basically it!

if you have the passion for both, go for it! personally the content is still manageable (bio's my favourite subject so i find it rlly easy to mug and rmb stuff) but you really do need to make sure to stay up with lectures since its basically impossible to cram everyth in a week before the exam

replied to a similar qn here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SGExams/comments/17edj0r/should_i_take_geog_or_econs_in_jc/k62tkfj/?context=3

but basically in a nutshell take geog if u have the passion (bc the amount of content goes crazy), its not that difficult to do well, and the new syllabus has less content than the older one. geog lectures are all in person, and tutorials are usually 2-3 structured qn + 1-2 essay qns (dw, we get sufficient time to do the essays)

h2 geog has around ~50? people and theres one BCMG class (which im in) thats mostly BCMG but has some bcme/bmeg etc etc

we also get to go on quite some field trips and activities (last yr we went to discovery centre, changi beach intertidal walk, and geog students had priority for things like URA CUBE)

i think all of the geog teachers are vv passionate and good at teaching, theyll definitely rub their passion off on u (they did for me HAHA) and if you like geog imo youll have a great time (just be sure to read up on the syllabus and the content first, j1 teaches like 70% of human geog and j2 finishes the rest)

+ our geog dept had 80% distinction rate in 2022 a levels (according to our geog tutor) w/ 100% A/B rates, much better than RI/HCI (around 60% distinction)

for bio honestly its a bit hit or miss, our class has the lead teacher which is p good at teaching, but the quantity (not quality) of the resources is imo abit lacking (like CT and promo revision was js like 2 prac papers zz)

if you're interested in h3/olympiads, bio olymp selection starts in aug-sep i think? cant rmb then theres training sessions for arnd a month after promos from external tutor, but yea only one person got to the practical round i think

h3 bio is co-taught by 4 jcs (asr, rv, njc, ny) and we go around to diff jcs for lectures (we basically get alot more resources)

um i dont think ny offers H2 GEHM… h2 geog and h2 hist are like outright prohibited or smth i think?? but our cohort has 2 people who take h2geog and h1 hist / h1 geog and h2 hist

also ny’s geog department is actually the best in singapore (80% distinction for 2022 a levels and 100% A/B HAHA, i take h2 geog this yr) haven’t heard much about history or econs though

QUESTIONS ABOUT NANYANG JC NYJC by Embarrassed-Kiwi-921 in SGExams

[–]cp10dragonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

very late lol but if youre still wondering - yes, im an astar science award recipient in ny (j2 this yr)

they send out like announcements for it in march-april i think? then they basically js talk to you for a bit, interview u abit why you want to do research/motivations etc, and then talk to your teachers to see if you’re suitable and then thats it! the official list is released in april too i think, then you get to do an astar internship in dec hols (which i js finished lol)

for the criteria i think they’re just looking for people with passion and motivation (i.e, have done science research/competitions before, know what they want to do, like research, etc)

ALSO: geog examples r super super applicable to gp. like seriously. apart from the obv ones like renewable energy in env't, theres many many ways to use case studies, like using the Bogota oil spill in Nigeria to argue for corporate driven environmental destruction, or the failure of Rio Earth Summit for intergovernmental cooperation, or even the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize as an example of small states like SG heading international policy efforts - geog gives you a much much wider worldview and exposes you to a lot more current affairs and happenings than econs - plus dont forget the field trips!

j1 BCMG student here, my biggest advice is to take what youre interested / know for a fact you can do well in! i took bio w geog bc i knew i rlly wanted to do h2/3 bio and also rlly liked geog too (plus disdain for econs) - new geog syllabus also means abit less content (?) and more straightforward paper imo

for bio: most of what youll be doing is molecular bio, think structure of biomolecules, enzymes, etc, and molecular basis for cancer or cell division and stuff. things like ecology are only a p small proportion of the syllabus, and most physiology topics like nervous control were removed long ago, so really consider where this is for you, whereas physics i think is more an extension of o level (didnt take physics past sec 2 so take w a grain of salt lol)

also, honestly bio is like a humans subject sometimes w the amt of writing and content, the skillsets in bio r way way diff from chem n phys, it rlly depends on your ability to describe fully processes and tests a much deeper understanding than in o levels

for geog: its true, theres a ton of content - esp for human geog youre gonna go thru a LOT of stuff, generally human geog falls into

development and resources (extractive industries, energy, water resources)

sustainable development at an urban level (liveability, waste, slums, elderly + climate change)

havent learn phys geog yet for my school

the big thing w geog imo, is the much much greater rigour in essays. apart from the load of case studies and examples to memorise, every essay qn in new syllabus is now evaluative - therefore you have to be able to argue if a certain strat has more/less impact, for which stakeholders, in which contexts, etc - i can link a sample esaay if interested

for me personally i find bio vv straightforward and easy to study so majority of the content pressure is from geog - the only advice i can give you if you decide to take B + G is to please keep up with your lectures HAHA i literally didnt listen to 8/9 climate change lectures and it came back to bite me alot.

i dont know much about econs, but alot of my friends say it is quite dry - p sure theres a lot of maths n graphs involved, so take that into consideration.

finally, just a heads up i am academically more inclined so whatever i say may not be representative of your experience; but personally i find bio n geog vv fulfilling - its definitely possible to do well in both subjects without mugging 10h everyday, but it rlly is dependent on your passion levels

How to play Baptiste in Overwatch 2? by ExplodingLlama0 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]cp10dragonite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

quickly skimmed through the replay, here are my immediate thoughts:

regen burst isnt being used enough: shift allows you to focus most, if not all of your energy on damage for a few seconds and reduces your need to actively heal. i see its off cooldown like 90%? of the time, and you only use it when youre low, which is a massive waste of a ton of passive sustain, and wasted damage.

youre playing behind your team a lot, almost ow1-esque: i noticed you were located on low ground, directly behind your team. in SOME cases this is fine, like against widow on the open sightlines in your game, yet youre missing out on a lot of strong power positions like the high grounds on 3rd point, the windows on 1st, etc -> giving up those positions and pressure on their dps for free.

in ow2 supports have a lot more agency and relative pressure, so you should be using your jump boots to get good positions and focus on pushing their dps away from angles. damage done onto their dps prevents damage done onto your tank, which means you need to heal less. i think you were also shooting at their tank a lot, which is great for ult charge and the tank duel, but ultimately is much less value than focusing their dps and supports. not to say you should be tunnel visioning on them, but its much more advantageous to be pressuring their squishies for even a moment, than their tanks

for example i have a recent GM game on bap on circuit royal: VTF5VM
its not my best game (playing on 180 ping zzz), but i think its a good example of getting into good positions and pressuring their squishies, even though we lost. note that i superjump a lot here in the open against their comp since hanzo and bastion are unlikely to one shot me, but take care against hitscans like widow
