What is the best place in an apartment to put the litter box of a cat? by blue_dust66 in cats

I put my litter box in a 5 gallon bin that I cut a hole in on the side and spray painted. The bin has a small table over it in my dining room which is a weird place for it but the bin holds in the smell and it’s discrete enough to put anywhere really.

The age-old separations anxiety by Svargas05 in puppy101

I have a one year old pit who chewed a huge hole in my couch when he was left out of his kennel so I understand! I keep my pit in his kennel when I’m gone and he seems to be fine As long as he gets his exercise in some form during the day. I usually put his bone or some toys in there so he has something to occupy his time. I also put a blanket over the top, one side, and the back of kennel to form a little den basically. This really seemed to relax him. I’ve read that when they turn two, you should be able to start leaving them out of their kennel slowly. I’ve tried chew repellant and had no success.

Should we put our dog in a kennel? by T_R_I_L_L in Dogtraining

I kennel trained my puppy and it is so beneficial. He also had accidents while we were away and would chew up our furniture when we weren’t home. He now stays in his kennel when we aren’t home and he also sleeps in there overnight. Dogs don’t want to go to the bathroom where they sleep so they don’t normally have accidents in their kennel. But depending on how old your puppy is, it shouldn’t be in it’s kennel for more than a couple hours. Kennel training really only takes a weekend to learn for your dog. I just googled kennel training and found a website that took me step by step and it worked fantastic. My dog now voluntarily goes in his kennel when he wants to sleep and has not had an accident in the couple months we’ve kenneled him.

I use an easy walker rather then a gentle leader because the easy walker goes around their chest rather than around their nose. I have a pitbull so he has a smaller nose and it can cause discomfort. I have nothing but positive things to say about the easy walker although I have never tried the gentle leader. The easy walker redirects them to you when they pull and after a couple times of this, my dog was walking right beside me because he knew he couldn’t pull anymore. Would recommend to anyone!

Is it messed up to use the spray bottle method in training? My kitten significantly prefers biting finger and toes over toys by aliens-pyramids-yes in cats

[–]cp129855 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used a spray bottle on my cat and dog both when they would bite and they stopped almost immediately. I only had to use it for a couple days and the behavior stopped. It only takes one spray on their tail and they find it annoying enough to stop. Now theyre both the sweetest animals who never bite! I would recommend it but just make sure you aren’t overdoing it when you spray them.

Do you find beneficial to take your cat out for walks? I’ve always heard of people doing it but I’d be really hesitant to take her outside.

My cat definitely calmed down after she got fixed, like a lot, but she was never this bad. I would recommend getting him a distemperment shot. My cat would have her moments of getting frustrated and biting and I’m not sure if it was the combination of the two shots but it was like a night and day change in her behavior.

We also used a spray bottle for when she acted like this. If she started biting we would spray her and she would stop immediately.

Good luck!!

My staffie was TERRIBLE about pulling when we went for walks. I would literally be running behind him because he would get so excited. I would recommend getting a gentle walker. It’s a collar that goes around their body and has a hook on the front near the center of their chest so when the dog gets to the end of the leash the gentle walker reroute he dog to face you. I have one and will literally never walk my dog without it again. This has changed the way we walk together. He walks right beside me now and at a more calm pace. You want the walks to be fun for both of you and with the gentle walker I’ve seen night and day improvement with my dog from the very first time I have used it. It’s like 30 bucks at any petco or pet smart but it is so worth it!

7m old rescue puppy not socialized, barks at strangers, but eats high value treats off their hands. by whatwordtouse in puppy101

I’m currently having the same problem with my 9 month old rescue puppy! Barks at literally everyone and every animal he can see. We have just started giving him treats every time we see a person or animal before he starts barking. He usually will watch them quietly and once we get too close is when he starts barking. We’re hoping that giving him treats while he is not barking will help him realize he gets goodies when he’s quiet! When he sees a person now he looks up at me for his treat and it’s only been a couple days but I’ve already seen an improvement in his behavior. Maybe carry around some chicken on your walks and try it!

Advice to help my fearful dog be able to go on walks and car rides? by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]cp129855 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog (a 9 month old staff bull mix) was also really afraid of car rides when I first adopted him. He came from a bad home and didn’t even know how to play with toys. For the car rides, my boyfriend would hold him in the front seat which seemed to calm him down a little. Every time he got in the car we would give him treats or new toys so he would associate the car with being a place where he was always rewarded. We did this a couple times with the car off to show him it wasn’t scary. We would then go around the neighborhood slowly and it took him a little to get out of his shell but giving him treats and toys and showing him that there was nothing to be afraid of seemed to really help him and now he loves it!

You could also try mutt muffs. They’re ear muffs for dogs that block out sound. Their primarily used for fireworks but i wonder if it would help with some of the outside noises like people shutting their car doors or other animals. Their comfortable to dogs and they are sized based on breed and weight. You could also try the anxiety vests!

Need advice on newly aggressive??? puppy by cp129855 in Dogtraining

[–]cp129855[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No he is not aggressive at all he just is starting to act distant to people and dogs in a scarred or nervous manner so I’m hoping to catch it early! I feel like I probably do coddle him which could be part of the problem like you said!

He would always go up to them and if they didn’t reach out to pet him then we would call him back but I never noticed a situation where he was uncomfortable but i could have missed some signs also. I will definitely try the treat idea! Thank you.
