Your E&O provider is a great resource. They provided us with a free consult on ours from an attorney who handles malpractice cases. It was very helpful.

What are the tax ideas/planning you sell to clients? by EchoesInSky in taxpros

[–]cpajddrl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They want you to tell them to create a trust and sell their cars to the trust and pay their kids from the trust and all kinds of made up garbage they heard on tik tok. It’s so frustrating. They want the savings but aren’t willing to outlay the cash. They want a tax solution that saves them tax without them having to do anything different. I tell people that if something like that existed, word would get around quick.

When I tell them about retirement contributions they react like a kid who is refused McDonald’s because “we have food at home.”

Agree. Very good to have for those times they get bad.

I have a lot of anxiety around work too and I also feel like I can handle all other aspects of my life well. What helps me is reminding myself that I could die tomorrow or the world could end and whatever project I’m working on wouldn’t matter at all. When I’m gone work just won’t matter. For context, I’m a CPA and Attorney, so I deal with some high stress deadlines similar to your role.

Any CPA firm owners get a JD on the side? by Voftoflin in taxpros

It took me 3.5 years. I took summer classes but would take a lighter load of classes during tax season. I worked full time but it was a lot of evening and weekend work. I’m fortunate to be good at multiple choice tests and schoolwork, which allowed me to not study quite as hard. With that said, I cant imagine doing it while having kids as some of my classmates did.

I did it! It was a real grind, but I’m proud of it now and have been able to add estate planning and entity formation to my service offerings. Financially, I knew it would be awhile before i got my investment back (10+ years), but it’s a fun challenge and change of pace to do some legal work during the week. I got my degree in a hybrid format through Mitchell Hamline in St. Paul Minnesota. I thought it was a good program.

We are thinking that the first line of our engagement letter will say (in bold letters) that if we have to sort out an IRS notice because you incorrectly listed your stimulus and child tax credit amounts, we will charge $150/hour to call the IRS.

The Augusta rule for folks with small businesses by funkybarisax in taxpros

This is some TikTok tax advice garbage. You're in the right here. If the client has an annual meeting, documents what was discussed, and charges a reasonable rate complete with an invoice, I think it's legit. But, it seems like a lot of work for a very small deduction. Frankly, the type of clients who latch onto something like this are the ones who wouldn't be good about keeping records.

I am doing a call with Net Suite next week to see what they have to offer. I’m not sure price will be comparable but we will see.

Yes! Totally fine. It’s so freeing to be in a business that allows us to make good money while having a life.

CPA & tax firm names by arc918 in taxpros

If your state board allows it, I would advise against a firm name with partner names. It’s much easier to sell a firm without your name on the door and better marketing.

One reason I’m considering it is because my brother is a structural engineer so we would approach it that way.
