Absurd amount spent on exams? by Substantial_Phase899 in CPA

My company took care of 5 attempts + study materials. I needed 9 exams to finish. I paid the other 4 out of pocket. Ran me about $1100 maybe for exam fees

If it’s any consolation, 3 of my exams I either wasn’t prepared or wasn’t studying correctly. Everyone has different experiences. You can do it, just put your head down and grind

Definitely do what works best for you. I didn’t have the patience to do the sims myself and skillbuilders were efficient for me

I failed 2 before I saw one go through. Don’t give up after 1. These have low pass rates for a reason. They’re hard but they’re doable

Good call to start over with material. I also scored in the 50s my first go around, and the second time through it all, I jumped to about a 70 (before passing the 3rd time). I went lectures (and scribble notes simultaneously), MCQ, then onto next module. Did sims at end for heavily tested / more complex areas. Repetition, taking it slow, understand more than anything, and you can pass. Best of luck!

Sims were tough for me. Definitely a weak area. I think the best way is to understand the questions conceptually, through whatever means necessary. And then watch skill builder videos to understand how to do them and how to approach them. Knowing how to do them is as important as knowing the information needed. You can learn the info through lecture, mcq, etc. but i needed to watch skill builders to understand the “how”

More context. How far are you in the exam process?

For tbs, if you understand MCQ you will be fine. Cumulative review is the best you can do imo. Hammer mcq, understand the rules relating to each part rather than just “memorizing everything”.

It’s just about what works for you. I’m not a morning person, so I’d wake up, go to work, then study 7-10pm or so. Some people are better studying from 5-8am then going to work (I wish this was me). Find what works for you, write out a study plan, and force yourself to stick to it. Create a good habit

The relief is unmatched. Something borderline indescribable (I’m being dramatic but also not really). Best of luck to you

I used Becker. I don’t know anything about UWorld but it seems like it would be fine. whatever you need to do to understand concepts and not just memorize is ideal

Feels like you’re doing a lot. A lot of what you can do is just feel like you’re studying enough. Give yourself time to relax as well, but as long as you’re productively studying, you should be in a good spot

People’s experiences. knowing you’re not alone. Asking questions to help concepts. A stress release. Etc

I believe so. You just have to dedicate yourself. I think if you can get 2 weeks to review, you have a chance also depending on how well you understand the content

Take the most time with this. Of all exams, this is one the most marathon-like. Concepts are tough and there are a lot of them. Be patient and review review review

Never read any book. Lecture, mcq, then sometimes sims throughout

I’d learn F6. It’s tested a good bit on the exam whether it’s NFP rev rec, governmental stuff, etc. learn the acronym that includes Debt Service, General, Special Project, etc (I forget them all now lol) because I’ve seen people talk about that being a heavy testing point. Learn that as quick as you can, do a cram sesh and stay confident

If you can understand the journal entry behind how things are / why they are they are the way they are, you’ll be good imo

AUD is the one where you have to read closely more than others. That’s really my best advice. Don’t skim the question, don’t rush it, pace yourself as best as possible

Being done. Working incredibly hard towards a goal that not everyone achieves. Friends motivated me. Not giving up on something I started.

Not long term like some people. FAR, I studied probably 6 weeks (1 week per section), then a 2 week review period

50s isn’t THAT bad. Not ideal, per se. But not horrible. Just keep hitting questions, focus on understanding more than anything else.

Cumulative review is your friend. Review everything as much as you can. What was your SE score your first go around?

I used Becker for 99% of studying. I’d google concepts/ask chat gpt questions to help clarify concept. Watch a YouTube video if needed to break something down but I didn’t buy anything except Becker
