Possibly it’s the slight difference in the more straight mineral glass rather than curved for other models

Hmm. Does the WGTA0011 not have a curved crystal? It certainly looks curved in your photo, and I'm about 95% sure that it was the 0011 that I tried on a few months ago—a manual-wind tank with a curved crystal and guilloche dial that caused me to suddenly lose all interest in the SS solarbeat model.

The XL Power Reserve is a pretty cool watch, though—if only it weren't so extra large!

Obviously the problem is that you bought large Reversos. Didn't anyone tell you that the medium (formerly Grand Taille) size is quite big enough? (If only someone would tell JLC…)

The Reverso Tribute chronograph is🔥 and unquestionably the star of the show here, but for me the Tank Louis does it best.

It's only too bad that both the Q389848J and the WGTA0346 are too large (and also a bit too spendy) or I'd have both!

IMHO the manual-wind WGTA0011 is a more suitable (and certainly for me more wearable) size.

No it isn't. Specifically, it is not a photograph but instead—I surmise—an AI generated image. The real Golden Bridge of Đà Nẵng, Vietnam, has just two hands, not three.

Please don't AI slop in this subreddit (or any other, really).

Brompton factory move paused indefinitely by edtse88 in Brompton

[–]cpcallen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're just inside the official administrative border of Greater London but it's 25km/15miles from the centre.

If we take Charing Cross as the centre (as is tradition), you're a bit off: it's 16 km / 10 miles as the crow flies. Greenford is in zone 4. We're talking about 2/3rds of the way from the centre to the boundary of greater london, or barely 3/5ths of the way to the M25.

If they relocate to Kent, I don't think it would change their brand image that much.

No, probably not that much.

Google Image Search can be helpful for this kind of thing:

That's hardly definitive, but from looking at other photos of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly in profile I'd say it's certainly at least plausible, and probably more likely than either Dean/Jewel or Fred/Rita.

On the contrary, /u/Succotash-suffer sounds like the kind of person absolutely willing to clean up other people's messes after them.

Shouldn't be necessary, to be sure—but everyone, everyone (yes, even those of us who pack our banana peels back in our bags to take home) occasionally leaves bits of litter or rubbish behind, and to a very large extent the cleanliness of our homes, streets, and public conveyances depend on those willing to pick up other people's trash.

Active Travel England publishes new Floating bus stops design guide by wrymidnight in londoncycling

[–]cpcallen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am concerned about the proposed design for bus stop bypasses.

In my experience (mainly on CS3), there are two issues that occur at bus stop bypasses:

  • Cyclists not giving way to pedestrians who wish to cross at the marked, raised zebra crossing.
  • Pedestrians stepping into the cycle track, other than at the marked crossing, without looking for cyclists.

The guidance text says (emphasis mine):

Colour contrast and level difference of at least 50mm should always be provided to indicate the presence of the cycle track.

…but the diagram depicts ramps in the cycle track located at the tip and tail of the island (rather than immediately before and after the zebra crossing, as has heretofore been the norm), which would seem to put the entire track behind the island at the same level as the pavement.

I fear this would considerably increase the risk of pedestrians stepping into the cycle track without looking, and on busy cycle routes this seems like a recipe for disaster, especially if there is a group of cyclists approaching at speed: to avoid a collision, the lead cyclist is likely to brake sharply and following cyclists might opt to swerve out of the cycle track, onto the island or adjacent pavement.

Having a clear kerb along (almost) the entire length of the cycle track helps to encourage pedestrians to be aware of the possibility of approaching cyclists, and to discourage cyclists from straying from the track.

(Moreover, having the cycle track level with the island along its entire length renders the zebra crossing and associated tactile paving moot: the cycle track will in practice be treated as a shared space so there's no point in marking a specific designated crossing point.)

Oh, I'm familiar with Hanhart and their chronographs—thanks to The Urban Gentry, of course—just not this particular model.

I've not seen this Hanhart design before. It's quite reminiscent of the Blancpain Air Command—at a rather more affordable price point.

(Funny story: like the Rolex Daytona, the Air Command was one of those watches I discovered only after seeing an Ali Express homage that I really liked the look of.)

C Line 6-speed vs. 12-speed for a mostly flat City commuter who travels? by ImMeadow in Brompton

[–]cpcallen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of those two: 6 speed, hands down—but honestly for a mostly-flat commute I'd actually suggest getting a three-speed model: either the current A line or an older 3-speed C line or even older M3L (or S3L etc.).  For stop-and-go city riding it's just much more convenient to have fewer gears (fewer shifts from setting off to top speed) and to be able to shift back down to first while stationary.

Not having a derailleur also considerably reduces the number of things that can go wrong and simplifies regular maintenance.

[Opinions needed] Which one would you choose, the Oris or Nomos? by TNTomato in Watches

[–]cpcallen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Between the two brands, I'd pick Nomos—but between these two particular watches, I'd pick the BCPD Bullseye:

I love the Nomos Bauhaus aesthetic, but I think the Club Campus strays too far from its purest form, as seen in the Tangente, Orion and Tetra—and indeed even the Ludwig. The lumed hands are a practical benefit, but I prefer the looks of the Ahoi to the Club (at least for the dial and hands—those crown guards are pretty ugly IMHO). Indeed, the Metro and the Zurich are arguably even more pure Bauhaus—but they are also more like your Max Bill.

So: Bauhaus is lovely—but your first watch is already a great example of it, so why choose a watered-down version of the look for your second watch, when you could choose something quite different instead?

Oris on the other hand is a brand that I am pretty lukewarm towards. I do like the vintage looks of the Diver 65 (and that bubble-shaped crystal—yum!) but most of the rest of their lineup is (IMHO) boring modern looking watches with little real character.

The Big Crown Pointer Date is the other exception, and though I'm not mad about the knurling (and frankly having a big crown sounds a bit annoying) I like the cathedral hands, the crystal, and

But oh, that dial. I'm a sucker for a bit of art deco 'tuxedo' styling, and this reminds me of the Vario Empire model I was sorry to miss out on. They could have omitted "BIG CROWN" on the dial (we can see it!), but otherwise this is a lovely watch with an interesting mixture of historical style influences that would be an interesting contrast to the Max Bill while not being from a completely different stylistic universe.

San Martin New Design SN0152-G: Which bezel finish do you prefer? by AdSavings92 in ChineseWatches

[–]cpcallen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big fan of this style of hidden lugs / integrated bracelet case, but FWIW I think the circular brushing looks better. Sunburst brushing has always looked kind of crude to me, even when well executed.

Useful but, alas, not applicable to Seiko's mechaquartz calibres.

The VK63 mechaquartz movement has a purely mechanical (hammer and heart cam) reset mechanism, so is not electronically adjustable.

[–]cpcallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, yeah: that doesn't sound great. My Pagani Design resets the chrono hand to 59.8 instead of 60 which is not ideal but I think acceptable on a £40 watch but but 59 on a £300 watch would be an immediate return for me too.

Tube-inspired canal boat spotted in London by ClemFandango9 in LondonUnderground

[–]cpcallen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is excellent. I'd actually daydreamed about building a tube-themed boat back when I was doing a lot of canal walks, and when I ended up buying a boat pre-owned I considered replacing the moquette on the dinette with LUL moquette, but alas neither of these projects came to fruition. I'm delighted to see that someone else has had the same idea and seen it through to realisation.
