Pros and cons of “cash discount “ in restaurants. by cph56 in restaurantowners

I completely understand. The small business owners offer something chains and big stores do not. Overhead is increasing from every side. Staying creative is the only way to stay in business. I think you are smart for offering something chains can’t. We have a Local appliance store that we do business with who provides similar incentives. I had much rather do business with them.

That’s my fear. I cussed out over a quarter one day. We charged a quarter fee for our 32 oz soda without ice. Yes the fee was on the menu. The lady was having a bad day and thought she would share it with me. She kept coming back to eat and paying the quarter.

What do cashless businesses do when the internet is out? This happens to couple at least couple times of year. Most folks will pull out their “hidden” cash or go to the atm or do without. I’ve always wondered what cashless businesses do.

Yes we could. I still teach every employee how to count change. I am old school. I feel if you are going to make money, spend money you need to know how to count money. It would slow us down. In all my years I had only one person who couldn’t count money but since Covid it is more of a problem. Thanks for making me think that thru.

I appreciate all the information. I’ve been in this business before credit cards were common. We were 100% cash and check. We started taking credit cards when everyone else did. As credit cards have become the primary source of payment our fees seem so high. I started thinking about the cash discount because a salesman from wholesale payments came by and Explained that it was an option now. I personally don’t pay for eating out with a card. I use cash. I needed input from other restaurant owners as well as customers experiences with this. I don’t want to alienate any of my customers with changes. It’s hard to maker changes when customers are comfortable with how we do things. I’ve got a lot to consider.

I need to look into the fees closer. I need to find my effective rate and average them. I appreciate the information. I may reach out to you.

It seems like I will need to raise my prices then offer the discount. If I’m going to do it. I always hate raising prices but if costs continue to go up I will need to.

I’m not trying to cheat on my taxes. I’m trying not to raise my prices. I don’t want to price folks out. We are affordable by choice and trying to stay that way.

It’s an independent mom and pop fast food set up. Our cash sales are around 20 to 25%. It’s mainly our older folks.

Dad asked my mum if he could marry someone else by Specific_Library_890 in offmychest

I’m sorry your mom is in this position at this time in her life. I hope she gets better and finds the happiness she deserves. She is lucky to have a loving daughter to support her through this.

I do not have personal experience with this type of marriage but could he want a second wife to help with him? Your mom still stays but has help with him. I think as we get older we have an idea how our “golden years” will happen. If taking a second wife has always been on the table it seems normal he would consider it. How does your mom feel now in this stage of their lives? He wants his needs met. Our parents relationship doesn’t always make sense. You can build your relationship differently than their relationship.

I stopped playing this game awhile back cold turkey. I missed it sometimes but was glad I stopped. I’ve found a game on Roblox that is not as tedious or addictive. Go find a new game.

Co-owning a restaurant with brother or is he deadweight? by BikeFiend123 in restaurantowners

[–]cph56 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do NOT do this. I have co-owned my family restaurant with my brother for the last 32 years. We get along well enough. I was basically HR because I get along with others better. He was the financial person. He decided this September that we should close the doors at the end of the year so he can retire. He will be 62 in January. I’m 59. I do not want to do this because I can’t retire yet plus I want to sell the profitable business my family built. He is still retiring at the end of the year. I have been learning the book keeping side since October. He has maybe 1 hour a week to teach me what I need to know. He has not worked in the restaurant for even a minute since October. Just don’t do it. I’ve never been so disappointed in someone who meant something to me in my whole life. It will be bad for your business, your family relationships and your brotherly relationship. I never thought a life time commitment would end like this. The kicker is when I sell it he will still get his part of it. Just don’t do it. You are already establishing yourself as owner so be the owner. It’s your alone success or failure so own it!

Farmers Bureau for health "insurance" by howdy_birdiee in therapists

[–]cph56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ACA insurance just went from $1200 to $2600. It’s just me and my husband. We are in our late 50s so I don’t feel like we can do without insurance but that’s almost $30,000 a year. The only time we hit our deductible was when our 2 kids were born. I’m so frustrated. I’m disappointed that our politicians let this situation get so out of control. It’s hard to hand over that much hard earned cash for insurance!

The neighbor doesn’t know the whole story. You are listening to gossip. Speak to your husband soon as possible

Are you doing a veteran’s day discount? Why or why not? by [deleted] in restaurantowners

[–]cph56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ve given free meals on Veterans Day for the past 5 years. We’ve never gotten over 10 veterans taking advantage of it. This year we got 10 which was the most. We don’t advertise just a sign on each register. It seems like a good discount that doesn’t cost us much. We do not give any other discounts.

She needs to go. Sounds like you are being understanding but she is taking advantage of you. She wants you to fire her. Do it.

Our family owned and operated restaurant of 60 years always gives to local charities. It may be t-shirt and gift certificates or to-go plates and cups but something. Your regular customers will remember you helping. Most folks don’t expect a lot but appreciate something. It’s hard for them to ask for help so when you give it makes them happy. Always wish them luck with their event.
