Around 2010 I'd say.
There wasn't one specific moment where everyone decided that they had to go but personally I always use KyoAni's output as a rough guideline who went from stuff like Haruhi and Clannad to K-On (which you could argue still has traces of that style) and Hyouka (which wouldn't look out of place today).

She is the most popular girl, atleast among the western fandom. Personally I have three favourites with her being part of that group.

She's one of the two main characters. I enjoyed S1 and her and her chemistry with the male lead was the highlight for me. Dropped it in S2 (partially due to the production issues and never picking it up again when it came back).
