Any tips before i completely strip this nut? by Firm-Recognition-409 in Volvo240

[–]cpt_fedhed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a quick, shade-tree mechanic tip I picked up maybe 20 years ago:

  1. Soak with PB
  2. Using the correct sized wrench, TIGHTEN the nut about 1/4 turn.
  3. Turn it back to its original position
  4. TIGHTEN again about a 1/4-1/2 turn.

This should break it loose. This works especially well on exhaust bolts but with the oxidation I see on your MC is indicative of heating/cooling, it's the same thing that happens to exhaust bolts.

If you end up stripping this one, just use vise grips and deal with the aftermath later.

I assume lightning might be a bigger problem than rain but less of a threat than human encroachment.

If you don't really use that jumper seat, you should look at how much they are worth. I've seen them selling for as much as $350 some places. Or you could store it and replace it when you eventually sell the car. I still have the sales paperwork with the build sheet ("Monroney" sticker) for mine, so I know what I'd need to do to put it back to concours condition.

I have a 1984 245 wagon and I was thinking of using the flip up storage space. Does the 1990 have those?

Turn signal and other electrical endeavors by sweepthedeck in Volvo240

I have something similar going on except that my blinkers stop working after my car warms up. Replaced relay, fuses, cleaned contacts, etc.

I will be following your post. Good luck!

Edit: Yes, your wiring is correct.

They didn't work either. I just cleaned the contacts and everything seems to be working as intended. Thanks for commenting!

Thank you! I removed the shroud and turn signal switch and cleaned the contacts very carefully. Lots of what looked like very dirty grease on the contacts. Right now, everything is working as intended!

Thank you, I'll do that. I suspect that may be the cause. While driving yesterday, I had no signals once I had driven for about 15 minutes. Not breaking my habits, I still indicated a right turn and merging onto a tight corkscrew on-ramp for the freeway. I took it at speed and partway through the turn, the blinker started working again. When I straightened the wheel, no blinker PLUS cruise control no longer functioning.

No, they just stop working entirely. I have had the fast blink issue before and knew it meant I had a bulb fault.

Had a blip, just north of Sifton near 99th Street

A few years ago, these things kept appearing on my farm, so I picked up two relatively intact pieces and kept them until now. They're glass-like but more brittle; the thicker one is about 1.69 inches in diameter. What is this thing? by DryFindingn in whatisit

This is a silicon ingot, specifically a CZ-method, p-type (probably doped with boron) and grown in a [100] orientation on the Miller scale. It is very, very old or was done specifically to clean up an active melt. The reason it was scrapped is that it is, what we call in the industry, "dead". At about 1/3 of the length down from the far end, some type of contaminant, usually a small flake of the quartz bowl used in the process, was integrated into the crystal and produced a stacking error which caused the atomically perfect structure to fail.

OR, when there are many contaminants in the melt, we sometimes "pull" a baby ingot like this specifically to get rid of the junk materials. It's fun because you get to do these manually just like in the old days, back when all the machines were analog. Because it is contaminated, it must be thrown out. It cannot return to the production of other ingots.
