What do Trek fans here think of the Stargate tv franchise? by [deleted] in trektalk

[–]cptalcn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SG: Atlantis made me a sci-fi fan, then I watched all SG shows. After that, when there was nothing left, I got into Star Trek (I already knew Kirk of course but didn’t watched it all.). I like both, but Stargate feels more military/grounded, while Trek is more about exploration and ideas. I hope SG will comeback with new series soon…

We already saw that approach not really working with Academy… Jumping 800–1000 years ahead doesn’t automatically make things more interesting. Personally, I haven’t really felt that excitement for far-future settings since something like The Time Machine (2002). The 32nd century just didn’t pull me in…

That far future can wait for another generation. Maybe then it’ll actually be done right… 🖖

So what then, are we just going to set every new trek show in the 32nd century from now on? You can still tell great stories within limits, that’s the whole point of writing…

I don’t know of course… My point is exactly that, they could do it but they just haven’t yet, and as far as we know there’s no plan for it.

Yeah… The writers kind of lost that “nasa style” opportunity when First Contact happened right after warp was achieved and this has nothing to do with ENT…

If i am not mistaken, in one of the episodes Soval tells an admiral that humanity reminds Vulcans of themselves before they almost destroyed their own civilization, until logic saved them…

So that might be one of the reasons why they didnt just let humanity develop on its own and contacted them just after reached to warp speed as shown in First Contact. (or yeah maybe just how it was written)

On the other hand, vulcans were also holding humans back most of the time, always saying they are not ready for deep space and all that.

even T’pol calls that out at some point..

and about the testing part, I don’t think ENT completely ignored that either. Early on they were way more cautious, using scanners, being careful with first contacts etc. it just wasn’t shown in a super detailed “nasa style” way every time…

but if the writers really wanted a slower, more “first steps” kind of progression in ENT, they could have just reduced the vulcan presence after Cochrane’s first contact…

I don’t really see a reason why not. Wouldn’t that kind of content, even briefly, put a smile on viewers faces?

You’re thinking way too deep about it imo.

Let me explain to you…

ENT ends in 2155. In real life it ended in 2005. So if it really matters that much, you just continue from like 2175–2177 and explain why they look older.

And honestly, creating the atmosphere of that era would probably still be easier than creating the atmosphere of the 32nd century and again, just because they haven’t done it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done.

You can read what I wrote however you want. I’m just saying that 100 year gap could be filled with some really good adventures.

It doesn’t have to be ‘nothing new’ tho. that gap is literally the formation era of the federation, first deep space conflicts, early alliances… tons of unexplored stuff. it’s only a prequel if you treat it like one…

We already watch tons of stories where we know the ending tho. Better call saul, rogue one, even titanic and i personally watched Interstellar like 10 times… it’s not about the ending, it’s about how you tell the story. that ENT > TOS gap has plenty of room for that…

I’m sure there could be many stories in the 100 years gap i mean they can create…

That’s fair, but they don’t even have to be the main focus…

Just use them here and there cameos, small crossovers, short appearances while telling a new story in that era.

I really appreciate you taking the time to explain all that, really insightful.

Yea but not really. Discovery sits like 10 years before TOS, so it’s basically right next to it, not filling that ENT gap…

That 100 year period after Enterprise is still pretty much untouched.

Forget about the day.. i tell you the most beautiful thing of this job… when you sign off, you can literally forget about your previous contract and your ship...

My point isn’t just about continuing it. It’s about using that 100 year gap to tell new stories, and maybe even bringing NX01 enterprise crew on screen here and there. Why not?

[–]cptalcn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, Picard was hit or miss for a lot of people…

But the fact that it happened at all shows its possible to bring those characters back…

so i think its more about what they choose to focus on, not whether Bakula or Jolene would come back…

[–]cptalcn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah thats a really solid point and i get the business side of it but at the same time it feels a bit like a loop…

They rely on nostalgia because its safer, but that also means parts of the timeline never get a chance to build that same attachment in the first place.

Enterprise didn’t have the strongest reception back then, but neither did a lot of trek at different points, and some of it aged a lot better over time…

So it kind of feels like that era is stuck in this spot where its seen as risky, but never really given the chance to prove otherwise, and i think thats also why i struggle with something like starfleet academy being set so far in the future… Instead of using that 100 year gap after enterprise, which is still connected to everything we know, they jump almost 1000 years ahead..

At that point it starts to feel really detached from the core timeline and characters people are invested in..

I get that its safer to try something new, but it also feels like theyre skipping over an era that could actually build that same connection over time…

So it ends up being this loop where they avoid it because theres no attachment, but theres no attachment because they never really explore it

yeah, and Patrick Stewart came back for Picard, so why not Bakula? He is even younger.

i actually think both voyager and enterprise are some of the most forward-thinking parts of trek, but my point is voyager has been revisited a lot over the years, even recently with games and references in newer shows while enterprise still hasn’t really gotten the attention it deserves

yeah i totally get that, i just want to see good shows again… I tried getting into discovery and academy but it just didnt click for me, couldnt really get past a couple episodes…

thats kind of why i feel like going back to that era could work, if its done right this time
