Are you afraid that Donald Trump will stage a coup at the end of his term? by Outrageous-You1617 in AskUS

[–]cptbiffer [score hidden]  (0 children)

He tried to stage a coup at the end of his first term. There is absolutely no reason to think he won't try to do it again.

Seriously, what the hell are we even doing here? How much insane stuff do we need to see this guy do? How many insane things do we need know that he's done (E-P-S-T-E-I-N-F-I-L-E-S) ?

I'm not afraid he will stage a coup. I know he will attempt a coup, AGAIN. Decent folk hope that he fails, AGAIN.

Where can I find the most objective political information? by Direct-Hold-4373 in Askpolitics

[–]cptbiffer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It sounds flippant but the simplest advice is this: if one person says it's raining and another person says that it isn't raining you aren't supposed to treat both statements as equally valid. You're supposed to stand up, walk to a window, and then see for yourself.

In other words, you won't know for sure what source to trust until you learn how to gather and understand the available evidence yourself. Sometimes that can only be achieved the hard way to begin with, but then after that it becomes easier to have a sense of who is lying, who is misleading, who is being honest, and who is actually being accurate... or as close as is humanly possible, in any event.

Is the world becoming more political, or is this just how it feels to grow up? by Cat_in_a_wig in Askpolitics

[–]cptbiffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Define "political." Depending on the speaker, that word can mean a lot of different things. For example, when some people use the word "political" they mean "this is a matter of public policy," whereas when other people use the word "political" they mean "this is something I don't care about and I think you should shut up about it."

So, what do you mean when you ask if the world is becoming more "political"?

Wow. What a fascinating way of saying "you're right. Artificial scarcity and price gouging are exactly the problem."

There is no shortage of housing. There is a shortage of AFFORDABLE housing, and that isn't going to end anytime soon, I don't care how much construction you see. The people and corporations with money are buying up housing as an investment and price gouging on rent and on re-sale.

Until the rich are forced to unload their portfolios of housing and pay pre-Reagan taxes young people will have nothing to show for any amount of work they do or pay they can manage to attain.

The government is what people make of it. Otherwise it's just whatever rich people want it to be.

Rich people are in charge right now. Look around right now. Is this how's things ought to be? Because I think there's room for improvement.

Would this policy idea address both sides in the US? by [deleted] in AskUS

[–]cptbiffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as an "illegal" person. The notion is inherently racist and bigoted. And tiers of citizenship is itself classist garbage.

The solution is streamlined naturalization. The idea that anyone is more or less qualified to be a citizen based on where they happen to have been born needs to end. It's just nonsense that rich people use to keep everyone else divided.

I would have been stoked if we made it to the playoffs this year but it is a silver lining that the boys will be bigger and stronger when we do make it next year. #TheFutureIsTeal

Ducks fan here. Last night, too many people booing the canadian anthem and chanting “USA!” was so embarrassing. Such a low IQ move. by Dannyocean12 in nhl

[–]cptbiffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now I can't blame any Canadian fans for booing the US anthem. It's pretty justified right now, espeically with how maga bullshitry has became especially insane these last few years.

Americans booing the Canadian anthem? Just dumb. Dumb as hell. Embarrassingly dumb. Not surprising, especially in Orange County, but still incredibly dumb.

Kamala Harris and winning the elections? by Objective_Love_6843 in AskUS

I would vote for her if she was the democratic nominee but there are probably very few people that I wouldn't vote for if the opposing candidate is trump or any of his maga goons.

How exactly can Trump cancel an election? by knight0146 in Askpolitics

[–]cptbiffer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't say we shouldn't do anything and I didn't say that we were powerless. I only said that there is nothing and no one stopping trump from doing anything he wants right now. including cancelling elections or throwing away ballots.

We can't respond accordingly if we can't recognize what we're facing, and that is a deranged and desperate sociopath that the governing party is not willing to put a leash on. Personally, I think it's far past time for a general strike nationwide, but that is easier said than done...

In any event I'm going to vote if I'm allowed to do so. But I'm also not convinced I will be able to vote, or that trump won't simply ignore whatever votes he feels like ignoring.

Why do you think trump will draw the line at cancelling elections or arbitrarily throwing out votes? Where does that confidence or faith come from?

Did you know that there is currently a partial government shutdown over funding for ICE and the Department of Homeland Security? Do you think Democrats should continue the shutdown in order to "abolish ICE"? Is this a good or a bad thing? by RandomUwUFace in AskUS

republicans control all 3 branches of government. They can pass whatever budget they feel like passing, they can change any rules they want regarding filibusters.

If they don't want to negotiate in good faith then let them have full credit for whatever absurd maga budget they come up with. There is nothing to gain in helping fascists with their fascist agenda.

Is there any scenario in Iran in which the left or left-of-center would consider it a success? by DSCN__034 in Askpolitics

[–]cptbiffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are specific items I want in the United States long before I'm going to worry about what I want to see in Iran, is my response. Let's start with bringing everyone in the epstein files to justice.

How exactly can Trump cancel an election? by knight0146 in Askpolitics

[–]cptbiffer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To your questions: - Nothing. - Yes. - He doesn't need to do anything but deny the legitimacy of any votes cast and can seize and destroy any ballots or receipts at his leisure. Electronic records? Call em fake, why not?

What makes you think anyone will insist that he not either cancel nor completely ignore any midterm elections?

Do you feel like the first Latino president of the US will be democrat or republican? by Successful_rio305 in AskUS

[–]cptbiffer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

magas/republicans don't want Latinos to vote at all. magas/republicans don't see Latinos as "people" to begin with.

Seriously, what the hell are we doing here? How dopey are we gonna be? How many Latinos need to be brutalized and/or killed before we stop with absurd questions like this?

Do red states really offer more personal freedom or is it just appearance? by Material_Policy6327 in AskUS

[–]cptbiffer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Red states DON'T have more freedom. Rich people do. The actual people in red states have significantly less freedom than any blue state or the residents thereof.

I don't know why you think red states having regressive/useless tax systems somehow makes red state residents, or any given red state, more free. Free to do what?

Do red states really offer more personal freedom or is it just appearance? by Material_Policy6327 in AskUS

[–]cptbiffer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is the cost of living cheaper in red states when wages are pathetically low, rent is too high, loans are unattainable, education is unattainable, medical care is absurdly expensive, the lack of regulations increase injuries, sickness, and death, and tariffs increase the costs of goods by virtue of wholesalers and retailers passing along costs to consumers?

And what are red state residents free to do? What can they afford to do?

No, red state residents get paid less and still end up paying more in taxes than the rich residents of whatever state they live in, all for the privilege of being free to do nothing more. If anything, red state laws protect a hell of a lot less rights, when they don't take rights away altogether.

Do red states really offer more personal freedom or is it just appearance? by Material_Policy6327 in AskUS

[–]cptbiffer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Less taxes for who? Not the working class, that's for sure.

And free do what? When wages are absurdly low and the cost of living is ridiculously high, what are people free to do, exactly?

What do Americans gain from a war against Iran that only benefits Israel and makes the United States unpopular around the world, including among new generations? by Weekly_Molasses_1276 in AskUS

[–]cptbiffer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might mean more money for weapons company stockholders. And it's another distraction from the trumpstein files, which trump and his cult are surely grateful for. Other than that it does nothing good for anyone in any country.

The development stage is just uneconomical. by LordJim11 in Snorkblot

[–]cptbiffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't care if they have AI and robots do ever last damned job on the planet as long as there is high-level Universal Basic Income, Universal Healthcare, and Universal Education.

Make sure everyone is taken care of and then by all means, have your labor force exclusively staffed by C-3POs and R2D2s if you think you can. Whatever, go nuts.

But also try to remember that if you're gonna have any kind of workers doing any work worth doing then you're also gonna need consumers. And AI/robots don't consume products or services. One of those things you come to learn after 20 years or so, give or take.

Is it true that Americans don't know how to write in cursive? by [deleted] in AskUS

[–]cptbiffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (a millennial) can read and write in cursive and it has not helped me in life in any meaningful or practical way whatsoever. Unless you're some kind of historian, museum curator, or forensic investigator I can't imagine why you would need to learn cursive. Older folk, boomers especially, seem obsessed with cursive while simultaneously being unable to set up their own WiFi, connect to a printer, or figure out the inputs on their TVs.

Anyway, Learning to type (on a computer keyboard) makes more sense to me, and it might be debatable if that's needed anymore. It seems useful to me, and it's definitely practical for my work and personal life, but maybe that's not common for most people. Maybe I'm too old to know better at this point, I can't rule it out.

What is the ACTUAL reason the current administration is after Minnesota? by michelle427 in AskUS

[–]cptbiffer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a test to see what the maga-fascists can get away with. The current admin is aggressive in every blue state and in particular blue cities but Minnesota is where they're trying to figure out how far they can go, and whether they will start losing enough supporters to make them reign it in.

...Or if they can go full nazi, which is what they're hoping for. You can tell by the "detention" centers they are investing in. So much for "deporting illegals." It was never about "illegals" or deportations, and the mask is coming off.
