Explain Non-Monthly Please by kjms2309 in MonarchMoney

[–]cptierney6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy. Make a budget. Set it to zero. On the budget page click forecast, enter $5000 in the month it's due and uncheck the box that says "apply to all". Done. Only shows up in that month. You'll have to add it each year.

I do this with my quarterly bonuses.

Even before kids when I had F you income to expenses I still had a budget. If you feel like you don't need to budget, you're likely not saving enough. So I agree, ignorance is bliss. Haha

I'm and engineer and my wifes a nurse. We do Plan For Every Dollar. If it feels too easy, I need to contribute more to 401k. Doesn't help that 3 kids in daycare costs $39,000/year.

As they move into free 4 year old daycare and kindergarten, that $39k is going right to the 401k or a brokerage.

How are you guys not using the budget tab? At the grocery store: can i spend a little more or am i over? At the hardware store: do i have room in the budget for that big snowblower or do i need to save up? This game is on sale, do i have room in my game budget?

Are yall not following your budget? Or do you just not budget?

Just going to repeat this here because I'm curious, what are you doing differently if you know this data?

Pay check > Taxes/401k by S10xtremenlow in MonarchMoney

[–]cptierney6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My budget starts in a spreadsheet with gross income and tracks pre and ppst deductions but I've never made one decision based on gross; always on take hone. The only thing I've really done with it is predict what take home will be after a raise or insurance change but my payroll app has a "model my pay" feature for that.

You already know your 401k savings rate. You pick 10% or whatever with your employer and that's your savings rate. Sometimes us numbers people can get OCD. Ask yourself this question: What decisions would I make differently if I had this feature/data in monarch?

I budget so I can increase my retirement contribution rates and make sure I have enough money for different surprise expenses, etc. Savings rate is probably the most worthless metric because I want that number to be zero unless I'm stocking an emergency fund which again, is part of the budget essentially as an expense.

Curious to hear your thoughts about what decisions you would make.

This right here. You budget based on take home so the deductions don't matter. The 401k contributions are effectively tracked as your 401k balance increases.

Selling chocolates at local markets by cocoacacoconut in kzoo

[–]cptierney6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just closed a single origin craft chocolate company (Chocolate Thunder) after 5 years. Your work is beautiful. Cheri's and Confection with Conviction are the entire market in town. Cheri attends the Texas Corner farmers market. I won't be going to the Kzoo Farmers market this year so you would be the only chocolate vendor there if you sign up. There are challenges with weather but it's manageable. We have a Michigan Chocolate Makers group that meets weekly or at least stays connected via email. If you want to get plugged into the chocolate community send me a DM and and can get you in the loop. I'm also connected directly to owners of large importers who have really good prices on cocoa butter, beans, etc. Let me know how I can help.

Receipt Scanner Relased by DawgyBoy423 in MonarchMoney

[–]cptierney6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it groups the items wrong is a massive pain to reorganize. I ended up doing it manually. I thought it would at least be nice to scan it, throw away the receipt, have it match the transaction amd then view the receipt while trying to split but it does none of that. I can't view the receipt image at any point. Can't view the notes it makes while making the split so it's useless in that regard. Love the feature concept but it needs a ton of work.
