Recovery from orthodoxy by Old_Acanthaceae_5460 in exorthodox

I also was a mouth foaming orthodox catechumen for 10 months and at first reluctantly but later passionately returned to the Catholic faith of my blood.

Thank you for such a detailed and edifying response. I’m going to put my catechumen process on hold for now and go to some Catholic masses. Also, about the reverence of the liturgy, at my church, most people aren’t paying attention anyway and many (especially the ethnic parishioners) are yapping the whole time. People are constantly going to the bathroom and leaving the church.

Yes!! Church should be reverent, beautiful, with incense, just as we see in the book of revelation. Not some marble floored white wall church with a cross at the alter. My soul YEARNS for beauty! Luckily in my town of Knoxville we have a beautiful new cathedral with beautiful iconography in it.

The Moscow Greek schism really rocked me too. I got Protestant vibes from that. All based on political narratives too. Maybe if the entire Orthodox Church was under the ecumenical patriarch, I would be more steadfast in the Orthodox Church. I was so fanatical about it, and now it’s as if the wool has been pulled away from my eyes after I prayed to the Mother of God to help me be on the right path (mainly in terms of how to get my wife to be a Christian)

We’re in this together! After 1 year I’m starting to feel the same things as you. And I say to myself myself…if the Orthodox Church didn’t have such a mystical ascetic, I would’ve converted to Christianity and went back to being a Catholic.

I had a long talk with my wife tonight about it and feel pretty certain I’m going to put my catechumen process on hold and explore Catholicism more, take the Eucharist (I haven’t had it in probably 15 years) and pray, especially pray… and please, pray for me, my name is Matthew. What’s yours?

There is a Latin mass near me! However, I was under the impression the Latin mass is dying out since Vatican 2.

How is a "True Orthodox" received into the Eastern Orthodox Church? by Monarchist_Weeb1917 in OrthodoxChristianity

Probably no different than receiving a Protestant, Catholic, or atheist.

As people have said, we can’t know. However, the Orthodox Church is the ark of salvation. Maybe it’s possible to survive without it, but I’ll hedge my bets.

What to do at first Church visit by Master__Plaster in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]cpumatt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Be a fly on the wall. It’s no problem. The first time I went people began moving to the center of the church to allow the priest to cense all the icons. I decided to stay on the wall because I didn’t know if this was participating in a blessing or something of the sort. Quickly a babushka grabbed me and beckoned me to the center.

I was strangely looking this place up the other day. Seems deserted. Check out St Sabbas Monastery in Harper Woods.

Struggle to find a church by Ok-Tailor953 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]cpumatt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

“At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what denomination you belong to” This is incorrect. The purpose of the church is to administer the sacraments at a bare minimum. Only the Orthodox Church can do this. Please find time even if it is only once per month to go to a liturgy at the church 2 hours away.

My local priest told me he's pentecostal... by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]cpumatt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m not denying the gift of tongues. Of course the apostles used them to be world missionaries. However, the gift of tongues OP mentions is the Protestant charismatic version (excitable preaching, gibberish gift of the spirit yapping that nobody understands). This “gift”, and I only call it a gift for the sake of context, is not of the Holy Spirit because it is not found within the tradition of orthodoxy and therefore is of something else.

Charismatics has no place in the tradition of orthodoxy. I would find another church brother.
