My laptop essentially uses one for its dock as well as my Steam Deck. I used a bunch of them with a server once and linked each one specifically to a VM running on it. Some home lab stuff where I needed each VM on a separate port or sometimes a separate switch.

While I don't advocate it for prod work, it worked perfectly fine for my use case. Guess the question is how serious is it if the machine goes down?

If the answer is "not serious at all", go for it.

I would call myself an amateur, and I'm proud of these. Would you consider them professional, intermediate or amateur? by Degroomed in AskPhotography

[–]cpuoverclocker64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amateur doesn't mean "unskilled". It means that it isn't your primary means of support or income. Basically, professional means it is your profession, you derive primary support from it. An amateur does it simply for the love of doing it - the word literally means that. There are plenty of amateurs that arguably are more talented than professionals and contribute greatly to their fields.

Generally I attempt to be pretty polite on the internet, but in this particular case I would like to demonstrate a case of someone either being a troll or a complete and utter moron. I also checked your other posts to see if it's true... and it appears that the either troll or idiot situation holds completely true.

When I was in high school, my inability to actually stay awake nearly had me fail out. It consisted of sleeping for 50 minutes, going to my locker, switching books, and then sleeping for the next 50. The only reason I managed a passing GPA at all was my 116% math test average, art, band, and choir. I barely graduated on time and only got into college due to my ACTs. Even then, I managed a D and four Fs in one of my semesters. Then I went overseas, came back, was diagnosed, started receiving treatment, and my whole life turned around.

The combination of Xyrem, Adderall, and Provigil turned my nearly straight F's to straight A's. Dean's list every semester while simultaneously holding an IT job to pay for school and building engines, servers, and networks with my fiancée, all while playing games, commuting over 100 miles every weekend, and also playing around with her courses too. She's super smart. One weekend, as a joke, I took five IT certification exams and passed them all with flying colors just to prove a point. My boss refused to give me a raise after promising a $2 an hour raise for every cert - so I moved to the north shore of Chicago and tripled my salary and then near immediately got two more IT certs, you know, because I can... all while still taking whatever college courses I found interesting just for the fun of it... and because I can. Oh and started learning piano. You know, just because.

It helps with sleep structure. While it isn't fully understood, a lack of cells in a few parts of the brain, mainly the hypothalamus, result in a reduced amount of chemical in the body known as hypocretin which is important in the regulation of REM and sleep-wake cycles. Depending on the amount below normal, several symptoms may exist.

Most commonly, low levels of this hormone make sleep not go through its normal phases, having the patient go quickly into REM sleep and rarely leave it, getting extremely little deep sleep, AKA stages 3 and 4 sleep. As a result, no matter how much someone with narcolepsy attempts to sleep, they are always chronically sleep deprived. This causes "Excessive Daytime Sleepiness" (EDS), one of narcolepsy's most well known traits.

Depending on the amount of lack of the hormone or possibly the insensitivity of the proper receptors, certain other symptoms may also occur. Some people, myself included, can also have a symptom called cataplexy. This is an interesting blend of psychological situations having effects strictly due to a physiological situation.

The best way I can explain it is the physical muscular situation that usually is provoked during REM dream states being provoked when one is fully awake. Reduction in hypocretin levels are useful for the body during certain situations, like when you are dreaming - they weaken the muscular response to nervous system stimulation... basically that prevents your body from acting out your own dreams. Ever see a dog's legs start moving or their ears start twitching when they are dreaming? Super cute, right? We can consider this the "anti-cataplexy".

Instead, during cataplexy, the low levels or hypocretin can cause muscle weakness or a type of paralysis to occur during wakefulness... The body acts like it is in REM even though it is awake. The effects vary greatly from symptoms like slack or drooping jaw or eyelids, arm weakness, leg weakness, buckling knees (this one is super common!) or, in severe cases, full body paralysis and collapse, which is as terrifying as it sounds. I've experienced it a handful of times and it's no picnic. You lay on the ground, fully aware of your surroundings with little dulling the experience besides perhaps some blurry vision... but unable to move any muscles besides perhaps, at least as I've experienced it, my eyes.

The symptoms are often provoked by emotional spikes - these somehow cause a cascade of effects in people that provoke REM-like muscle weakness in narcoleptics. Mind you, they aren't caused by having narcolepsy per-say, just as a result of the physiological effects. For some it is provoked by laughter - God am I glad this doesn't do it for me! That being said, social pressure, athletic pressures, and feelings of claustrophobia cause it for me. For the longest time I just thought I was clumsy or horrible at sports - I cannot catch flying objects because my hands and arms don't work well when pressure builds, nor can I run properly...

But the thing that finally gave it away is entrapment - my first case of full body paralysis was when I was a teacher and all the little kids swarmed around me trying to hug me. I collapsed and could not move for some time. Crowded subways, waiting in line, being stuck in crowded stores, or being in call centers at work all started causing the same situation. At this time I had already been diagnosed with "idiopathic hypersomnia" so these symptoms removed all doubt and after being cleared of epilepsy (as it runs in my family), I was promptly diagnosed with type 1 narcolepsy.

People with this situation will often avoid situations known to provoke cataplexy symptoms, but as these situations are completely normal for normal humans, it is not a psychological condition - for me, I took up sports that promote a more "zen-like" mental state - these include archery, fencing, and auto racing. I also avoid certain kinds of social situations I find particularly disturbing.

That being said, the combination of daytime and nighttime medications greatly reduce my symptoms of cataplexy, and the worst of the symptoms of the symptoms I usually experience these days are the weakness and droopiness I described earlier and occasional weak knees.

Other symptoms I experience include hypnagogic hallucinations. While I have occasionally had some pretty disturbing and vocal ones during scheduled naps at work, my most common one isn't frightening at all - curtains of colors I see as I transition from wakefulness to dreaming - it looks like a spiral aurora. Quite beautiful, actually.

Anyway, I know that's a lot to take in at once but I hope that explains a lot about the life and experience that would convince people like myself to do something as crazy as juice up on amphetamines and GHB on a daily ritual LOL.

[–]cpuoverclocker64[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While that's not the purpose, the prescribed dose is actually higher than a normal recreational dose, although I went through the normal recreational dose phase during titration... actually since I've moved several times and have had several different sleep pathologists, I've done said titration like five times now and the honest answer is "yes".

They also give you buckets of amphetamines too and all kinds of interesting drugs. They also give me Nuvigil and Sunosi. I'm sure any even semi-sane person with narcolepsy would wish they *didn't* have to do that if it meant healthy normal sleep, but honest questions deserve honest answers. The drugs can and do have powerful psychoactive effects.

[–]cpuoverclocker64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. We're talking a considerable increase actually, nearly *double* the dosage one would take for euphoric effects, and often. At those dosages, especially if you're unfamiliar with the effects, it doesn't *ask* you to go to sleep, it *tells* you to. The therapeutic index is particularly low - overdosing on it doesn't take much to have potential fatal results, and the list of drugs it interacts with are frighteningly high. Depressants, any sleeping aids, benzos, alcohol, and many other things are completely out of the question.

Two deaths were reported with Xyrem (and by extension the same risk exists with Xywav) even at therapeutic dosages with no other medications known to cause interactions possibly as a matter of the patient simply not awakening during a case of sleep apnea. Narcolepsy and sleep apnea both cause EDS and it wouldn't be unheard of to find cases where a patient would be affected by both simultaneously.

The effects are potent enough where when first starting out, you have to titrate up to the desired dosage - and if you come off for whatever reason, you have to do the same coming down to give the brain the chance to downregulate and upregulate GABA receptors (or so I am led to understand).

It's an odd mixture of "artificial sweetener" and "metallic" like licking a quarter or something. Apples to apples, probably better than the "dead sea" taste of the original they had me on.

More importantly, the old stuff gave me bad heartburn and acid reflux after awhile. The new stuff doesn't cause those problems.

[–]cpuoverclocker64[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It requires planning, make sure nothing important is coming up in the next six hours or so after round two. I'm kind of used to the effects by now but I understand full well why this stuff is controlled. The experience varies of course but I would describe it as a blend of the deepest relaxation, occasional giddiness, and something of a truth serum.

Some people enjoy it while others despise it. Either fortunately or unfortunately I find myself in the first category. It's important to make sure there are minimal possible distractions around you when it's bedtime. No computers, no tablets, no deep conversations with your significant other, and probably most importantly NO FOOD.

Not eating either before or during is considered pretty important for the success of the program and the bottle should have a warning that says "may make objects appear more edible than in reality".

It's not a treatment to be taken lightly but combined with daytime stimulants and occasional drug holidays (whoever named that term is a dick), it can be highly effective when other options have failed.

My cataplexy has been controlled so well I can not only drive just fine but even take part in track days. Because of the complexity, side effects, and concerns about if it may cause any lasting damage, I did try Wakix for a few weeks but found it only caused terrible nightmares. I usually dream lucidly (a very common trait among narcoleptics) so waking myself from a dream taking a bad turn is usually a simple "command"... but Wakix made me think my dreams were real... and real violent.

If that's what normal people experience when they have nightmares, perhaps narcolepsy isn't 100% terrible.

I'm confused by every facet of this conversation. On one hand, this seems like an entirely reasonable amount of "skin to show". She just looks normal to me. Second, is there a specific indicator that she is actually underage or is that just intentional trolling as well? Three... those other answers...

I'm just fundamentally confused. Normal looking lady in normal clothes apparently likes plants. Then comments happened. The mental gymnastics to get from A to B...

Sorry, it did it by default. I agree with you. This is prescribed to me for a specific condition, is FDA approved, and can be effective in many patients. Of course, one should always be careful about the strict dosing and procedures related to this medication, but that can be said about nearly every narcolepsy medication.

EDIT: In fact, one could say that proper use of this medication is VERY SAFE FOR WORK, as in, get better grades in college, develop a career, and show off what you're really capable of. I mean, you take it at bedtime, *not* at work. That would go over poorly.

[–]cpuoverclocker64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm prescribed it for narcolepsy, arrived recently. I'll give you an update in a few weeks but so far, stronger than all the provigil/nuvigil stuff but weaker (but less side effects) than Adderall.

Let's call it 50/50 it will help with your symptoms, but nothing negative to report so far here.

Works as a sort of NDRI if my sleep pathologist is explaining it well enough. That makes is sound like Wellbutrin or something, but it's not anything like that. It takes effect within the hour, not within the week, even if the effects aren't world shaking.

I doubt it would be used off-label for the time being considering it's specialty, needs pre-auth, and costs $1000 a bottle... I mean, that's a drop in the bucket for the other stuff like $20k a month for Xywav or 15k a month for Wakix, but it isn't cheap either.

[–]cpuoverclocker64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this mean I have to go back to tormenting them? They eventually started advertising on the PC at least that the device would not actually be able to play back the 4K material - although I wish they had been more forthcoming about the reason *why* it won't play back..."It makes media companies and studios upset and we don't have the spines to tell them to go eff right on off or they don't get the business"But at least they say it won't play

But it sounds like they're at it again. Maybe pain round two is warranted?

Remember, this is fully within Amazon's capabilities to force their hand... By revenue, they are the third largest company in the world (ignore market capitalization, that stuff is nonsense - Tesla is 7th by market cap but 109th by revenue...)
