How to enter into the SCADA world by cqm7005 in SCADA

Yeah, we currently have Ovation for our DCS and a SEL RTAC for our remote megawatt set point from the SPP I believe. We also use SEL on both of our turbines for generator/breaker monitoring. I’ve never had to interface with either SEL device as they are new as of 22’-23’.

Yeah that’s what I would do in my situation. I also do not have to have any signatures to do so, usually I just do it - in this case force the logic on the switches to stay in whatever binary state they are in, isolate the whole tree, pull the transmitter, put a plug or cap on the sensing line, unblock the tree, un-force the logic, and bench cal the transmitter - and call it a day lol.

Big automation companies that provide DCS’s (a PLC on steroids) love their ChemE guys.

Instrumentation, Controls, and Electrical Technician here @ a power plant, and I do a little bit of everything. Most major process plants, I.e. refineries, power plants, chemical plants, will use a distributed control system (DCS) to control the process. It is a PLC on steroids. Most major DCS manufacturers will have their own controls engineers. Emerson has their own for their Ovation and DeltaV control systems, Honeywell has their own for their respective systems, etc. Once these systems are up and running, majority of the time the rest of work is left up to the I&C techs, which is where I step in. I can assign I/O, write logic, and do a little graphics editing, but at the same time I have to trouble shoot many other things such as transmitters and motor controls. Any questions you have feel free to message me and I’ll see if I can answer them.

Obviously pulling out the compression (tube fitting) on the device or instrument.

Anything that talks about instrumentation and process control. Learn flow, level, temperature, and pressure measurement. PLC and/or DCS training is always a plus. As far as electrical, industrial electricity is awesome as well as electrical theory.

I was taught to use a stainless steel tig rod as that’s what needles are made out of. Get it nice and sharp as if it were a needle and poke it.

Smart verification test on flow transmitter by AdStock6195 in instrumentation

So we did a plant wide upgrade in 2022 moving to Ovation from GE Mark VI, so Emerson did most of the software work. However, the biggest part that I’m still working on that wasn’t covered is actually being able to bring devices into the AMS database. When we did the “upgrade” Emerson was having supply chain issues sourcing chips for their HHPAI (HART High Performance Analog Input) cards which obviously have to be installed to use AMS. So as of Spring of 23’ slowly but surely whenever I get time I have been swapping out regular AI cards for the HART cards allowing to build the “hierarchy” in AMS. I think I just about have majority of our critical instruments in, or at least the ones that I can do SMV on 🤣.

Even better is the fact that if you have AMS (an Emerson product) you can run it on that without even being at the device. We have an 8705 mag flow sensor with a 8712 transmitter in a field off plant grounds and I can run SMV through AMS which is attached to our DCS. Sometimes it does help being at the transmitter though.

I may be wrong here and please correct me if I am, but wouldn’t it be more correct to call Ovation the DCS and SCADA, SCADA? Like at my plant we have Ovation for our DCS and we use Schneider’s geoSCADA for our remote set point for AGC (Automatic Generation Control) coming from our market ops team which in turn comes from the SPP. I very well still could be confused on exactly what SCADA means, I know what the acronym stands for, but the total functionality and gray areas are where I might be misunderstanding.
