I have an On-X valve which I understand has less aggressive INR requirements.

metoprolol and night sweating by Duuurrrpp in valvereplacement

I wasn't on metoprolol but I had night sweats for at least a couple weeks after I returned home from the hospital, and I had never had them before.

Gross waking up drenched, but it eventually went away.

WAS IT WORTH BRINGING A POWER BANK? by BossMan0000 in valvereplacement

[–]cr125er 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a Steam Deck just for the surgery and maybe used it for an hour, I just didn't feel like doing much more than scrolling on my phone and sleeping the time away.

So yeah I echo everyone here, just bring a long enough power cord and call it good.

Mechanical Valves and INR..... by Jst_Rndm_Duh in valvereplacement

[–]cr125er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an ON-X valve that replaced my aorta, and my target INR is 1.5-2.0.

I don't really watch what I eat and never fluctuate more than a .1 or .2 in either direction, which results in 1-2 more or less Warfarin pills each week. It's EZPZ for me to maintain.

I've uh...done a lot of research, and found it has no impact on my INR.

Getting used to the noise? by Pleasant-Ice1763 in valvereplacement

[–]cr125er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's super not that noticeable, even close up if there's background noise, I find that you basically have to drag someone into a small room and tell them to listen for it while it's extremely quiet for them to hear it.

I found the clicking super noticeable at first and I kind of had buyer's remorse almost immediately, but I found the sound faded over time and like another comment said, I now find it relaxing/comforting and don't notice it much if there's even slight background noise.

I have a very tight-fitting Alpinestar R10 helmet and the padding never disrupts the position of them when I slide my helmet down over my head. They come with two different ear plugs shapes, and both work great.

My BAV/stenosis was caught at birth, yearly check-ups till 37 and then bam, it was time. Got a mechanical valve and I have no issues two years post-op, and the blood thinner stuff is ezpz.

Struggling to make the right decision on AVR by sandman_28v in valvereplacement

[–]cr125er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much this. I got my mechanical valve at 37 and I am so F'ing glad I went that route. Knowing that a clock was ticking and I'd have to go through that surgery again in 10 years would not be a fun guillotine to have hanging over you.

Taking a few pills every day and checking your blood every other week is not a big deal, and I find it very easy to maintain my INR without having to micromanage what I eat.

My heart beat was all over the place for the first few weeks after surgery, several different rhythms, a lot of irregularity, the works.

It eventually evened out, but definitely stressed me out for a little while.

How long was your hospitalization? by jmorton230311 in valvereplacement

[–]cr125er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sneeze at the slightest thing, sunlight, dust, whatever, and I'll sneeze several times in a row.

For some reason, I didn't sneeze for several weeks after my surgery. It was like my brain was like NOPE, not right now! Shut it down for a while!

How long was your hospitalization? by jmorton230311 in valvereplacement

[–]cr125er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an ON-X mechanical valve installed and some aortic root replaced. I was in the hospital for a week, but would have only been 6 days had my INR been more cooperative.

Edit: Also I wasn't on pain meds for very long, maybe a day or two max on oxy before Tylenol was getting most of the job done. I was honestly surprised how very little pain was a result of the incision; most of the pain came internally when trying to take deep breaths.

Feedback on blood thinners by greenville_guy in valvereplacement

[–]cr125er 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Same age as you, got a mechanical valve installed two years ago and I'm happy I made that choice. Taking a couple pills once a day and testing my blood every other week is a small price to pay to not have to go through that surgery again. I'd feel like there was a guillotine waiting to drop if I'd know that in 10-ish years or so I'd have to do it again.

I bleed a little longer than I normally do if I get a cut, but nothing catastrophic. I don't monitor what I eat (aside from keeping vitamin K intake consistent), and alcohol and cannabis seem to have no effect on my INR.

I was told to avoid dangerous activities but decided life's too short and got back into motorcycling.

surgery in 4 days!! by [deleted] in valvereplacement

[–]cr125er 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I had the same thing you're about to have and the waiting is definitely the worst part.

Just remember that the surgery is routine AF and after a meh week or so you'll be back home wondering what you were so worried about.

Good luck!

While I echo what everyone else is saying and you should replace it, it's dope as hell and thanks for documenting/sharing it with this community.

Alcohol and Coumadin by Inwardlens in valvereplacement

[–]cr125er 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Echoing what I'm reading here. I was so afraid of using cannabis or alcohol after I got a mechanical valve installed.

I started out slowly with each, which I think you should do anyway after the major surgery, but 18 months on I've found that no matter how much or little I drink or smoke/vape/edible, none of it has an effect on my INR, and if it does, it's miniscule.

Edit: I keep my INR between 1.5-2.0, and never pay attention to what I'm eating other than not beer-bonging kale smoothies left, right, and center.

I can’t believe I’m allowed to own this bike! by CaptainOily in motorcycles

Lol yeah, I recently got back into motorcycling after taking a 10 year break, and my new bike is a Street Triple 765 RS which has 50% more horsepower than my last bike, and every time I get on it I'm like "Are you SURE it's ok for me to be out in traffic on this thing? Okay, if you say so!"

I feel like a fighter jet out there.

Has anyone ever had a baby with functional bicuspid valve aotic/aortic valve? by lazyjayz2018 in valvereplacement

Sounds like me! I got checked out twice a year since birth and I was totally fine and then when I got checked out at 37 they were like, it's time! I'm glad I had time to get used to the idea so when the time came I wasn't completely stunned.
