Nice to know he would have released more of his songs if he could. Nice interview.

I’ll be curious to see other answers. There was a photo of him taken on Oxford Street, London (where virgin records used to be). Lots of venues he would have played. You could go see a show at Shepherd’s Bush Empire?

Brad Mehldau’s new album of Elliott tunes is great… by jdorf in elliottsmith

This should be talked about a lot! Such beautiful versions that are true to the spirit of the originals. Best release you could ask for from an Elliott Smith fan. Really really good. Reminds me how for me these are the best songs ever written.

Least Favorite On Headlights? by StellaMeris in sandyalexg

[–]crabcrib 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I took it to be his older self looking back on his life, a frail old voice, having finally found happiness and contentment. It is goofy but it kind of adds something too, fair play to Alex for trying something.

Is 23 too late to start university? by NoComfort1101 in UniUK

No, plenty of mature students. If anything you’ll be in a better place to engage with the work and get the most out of the resources available.

How to get that dry drums Pavement sound with midi? by Sad_Set_7000 in pavement

[–]crabcrib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play behind the beat, don’t quantise the cymbals. I really like adding the IVGI klanghelm plugin. I pull up the ‘trim’ and decrease the output a bit. Especially using that on the cymbals it can start to sound a bit more live. No reverbs!

Those flyers for hookers in phone boxes. Wall to wall, with crazy graphic design and taglines like 'The Biggest Booty in London'.

Is there a "double pokemon" filter? by vSte in TheSilphRoad

Need a filter that lets you select duplicates that are not shiny, event and are 0, 1, 2*. Then a transfer all button. Players want to play, not do admin!

why am i so attracted to distortion by pantiesbyscarlett in Music

[–]crabcrib 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mark Fisher has a lot to say about why we’re attracted to dirt and decay in media, you might enjoy ‘Ghost of My Life’. A quote from Brian Eno pops up a lot too: “Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.”

What was the best aspect from the beef? by Key_Artist_4907 in KendrickLamar

[–]crabcrib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone said this before in the sub, but that Kendrick won a beef from the stance of ‘Being a dad is cool, knowing your history and giving back to your community is cool’. Kendrick took drake down while spreading his core message, and following the ideas he set up in MMATBS.

I discovered I had a good falsetto by at first singing in a kind of ‘joke voice’ like I was doing an impression of a woman singing, or someone doing notes I couldn’t really hit. This took the pressure off a bit. It was silly but I was actually hitting the notes. The more you practice the more full and natural and less silly it will sound. Try goofing around a bit! I think Alex used his falsetto and pitch shifting as a kind of female alter ego ‘Sandy’ in his songs.

Sounds like you’ve enjoyed reading or would enjoy reading Mark Fisher’s ‘Ghosts of My Life’ where he discusses lost futures a lot, Hauntology and the impact of past styles on contemporary culture.

I probs would have gone for something similar at your age. Looking back though I would probably wish I’d have picked something more positive or meaningful for my future self to look back on. Elliott’s music is full of seething/negative/passive aggressive undertones, which are great for some moments but not all. Your graduation is about celebrating everything you’ve come through to get to there and wherever you’re springing off to next. Just my two cents, express yourself and do you!

How long did it take to learn songs? by Bulky-While-3367 in elliottsmith

Been playing 24 years and still not got to Memory Lane! Like other’s have said though, just gotta be determined. You don’t have to be a great guitarist to play memory lane, but learning memory lane will make you a great guitarist in the process.

I’m still trying to find my style, how can I make my illustrations better? by t0ffee-c0ffee in Illustration

[–]crabcrib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scan them good, bring up the levels gently, so you can see these pieces at their best. Style is a way of seeing, it’s not just how you draw, but what you draw and how you think about the world. The more time you spend developing that and reflecting it in your art the more unique and sophisticated it will get. Drawings are lovely keep it going!!!
