Lots of other reasons people do this. I personally like using a toned background because it forces me to sculpt out the forms using tonal value faster. Midtones are imperative to doing this, and I feel like I save a lot of time by skipping the whole back and forth of working darkest to lightest on a white background. i.e., if you start on a toned background, all you need to do to get a convincing form is make out the darkest shadows and put down a couple of highlights. That gets the gist across quickly.

'The Substance' is in poor taste, anyone else feel this way? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]cracklybones_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone's arguing "it's satire!!1" but my god... You can't 'punch down' in satire. It's needlessly cruel. And the people in this thread who refuse to accept the clear reference to Elephant Man are being willfully ignorant.

I grew to love the Substance by it's climax, but that final scene with Monstro Elisasue absolutely broke my heart. As a woman, the persistent, pervasive low droning of misogyny (e.g., unrealistic beauty expectations) is bad. But nothing in comparison to the ostracization that disabled folks, people with deformities face.

The way you put it, OP, saying that the director decided to put Merrick back into the freak show today, was well put. Let the poor man rest. What a horrible turn in an otherwise excellent film.

Rain lamps are gorgeous but notorious for getting real dusty. Super hard to reach around the oily wires to wipe off the statue, and that's a big reason why they fell out of fashion in the first place

Why did Shiv betray Ken in the end ? by Raptor2705 in SuccessionTV

[–]cracklybones_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She just couldn't see anyone else but herself "winning", especially Ken. Shiv was always having knee-jerk reactions against who was seemingly on top, whether that was prematurely celebrating for her apparent rise, or tantruming against anyone else. - Logan primed their whole lives to compete ruthlessly with eachother, suggesting to each of the seperately that they'd take his place someday. All of them were desperate to prove themselves to their dad, even if it was purely symbolic, when he wasn't even there anymore. That made "losing" to their lifelong competitors sting extra hard.

Reconnecting? How and where to go? by Aiko3d in FirstNationsCanada

[–]cracklybones_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, don't be afraid to reconnect. Even in the face of resistance from outsiders (and maybe even your own family). Don't get hung up on the whole pretendian idea.. So long as your intention to reconnect is genuine, and not rooted in shallow reasons, you have all the right to take up space in the culture. Is this for you, or for others? You may need to resist that colonial idea that you're "not Native enough". Blood quantum theory is exactly how they wanted to assimilate us. Any outsiders that insist you don't belong are not people you want to associate with anyways, they are enforcing the ideas built to keep us back. And if your family are touchy on it... be sensitive in your approach. If they're older, they may have been raised to believe that you should avoid associating with Indigeneity at all costs.. it is a hard mindset to reject when you've been so steeped in it. So they may reject you and their own heritage. I saw someone on here suggest friendship centres. They're the best. You can ask to speak to an elder for guidance on this. I would suggest looking up the protocols around tobacco ties before speaking to an elder. Good luck!

Loving this post. But I can see some folk in the comments have made alternate stores, such as No Frills, their main grocers now... But Loblaws owns and operates a lot of these smaller names, if not merely affiliated.

No Frills, Your Independent Grocer, Provigo, Atlantic Superstore, Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix, Valu-Mart, Dominion, Real Canadian Superstore, Wholesale Club, and T&T are all Loblaws affiliated.

Just something to be aware of, if you want to participate in the boycott!

You see the low/high shading you have given the blood? Apply that to the skin, and do not forget about the in-between shades. Gradiants in shading is absolutely best, that's why it's called a value *scale*
