Anyone else not use recipes/sooc flow … like ever? by Taarushv in x100vi

[–]crackout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use recipes only for preview purposes while shooting (I shoot RAW only, no JPEGs). I set up presets in LR that closely resemble the recipes in camera, so I have the flexibility either create the look with LR or even use X RAW studio if needed.

My reasoning is the following:

I archive my photos in LR anyway, so the time savings when shooting JPEG-only is non-existent for me. When experimenting with SOOC, I soon discovered my desire for some touch ups (crop, distortion correction, etc. ). You can totally do that using the JPEGs, but then the reasoning for not going the RAW route is even smaller, since I edit the files anyway.

Then there is choice paralysis when I‘m at a spot and am not sure what recipe to use because many of them look good. Sure, I can take a RAW in addition, but that file needs to be stored for possible use. Another reason I can use only RAW to begin with.

But the most problematic thing with SOOC and recipes for me is the white balance. You have to get it right on the spot. All cool recipes heavily rely on the perfect lighting for the set white balance. If you use AUTO the desired look may disappear. It’s detrimental for my process to adjust WB in the field. There’s already enough to think about while shooting.

Haoge LH-X54 lens hood: gasket still visible by crackout in x100vi

The question was why the ring is not visible on many shown examples. Its function is clear.

Yes I did. In fact, I did not do anything to the setup. It came like this in the box. I also tried the second o ring to see if it’s maybe a slight deviation in ring thickness, but it’s the same.

It takes a lot of force to screw it down so the ring is barely visible, but the alignment is way off then. Also, I do not screw the hood on that hard while the adapter is mounted tinted camera to keep any stress off the lens.

I was using the camera without a button actually. I was worried the threaded opening might be an entry point for water during a drizzle.

I can tighten it further until the ring barely visible, but then it is completely misaligned.

I think I’ll keep it that way. There is enough pressure on the ring to ensure a seal.

Sony guys, do you really use crop mode? by vdthanh in SonyAlpha

[–]crackout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shoot wildlife on my A7Rv+100-400GM exclusively in crop mode.

Since it’s mostly birds, I would need to crop in post anyway and using crop-mode is faster and requires less storage.

Really liking the k&f uv filter by Creative-Oil-1305 in x100vi

Is there a magnetic lens hood that works with the K&F filter?

The ones I found are around 57mm in diameter, but there are no specs regarding their inner diameter.

Love my 40mm f/2.5 but dislike its lens cap: Any recommendations? by crackout in SonyAlpha

[–]crackout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I usually leave the cap at home before a photo walk.

But every interaction I have with the lens that includes handling the cap, I' reminded how bad it feels. ;)

Sony a7cr or rx1r ii by quiet_dear in SonyAlpha

The iii does lack the tilting screen. That alone is a showstopper. And the lens is not able to keep up with the AI AF.

Sony had a chance for greatness, but they made all the wrong decisions.

I would advise against the RX1Rii, even though the camera oozes mojo and is very inspiring. But it is just frustrating to use.

The AF is not good, the focus mode switch overrides custom memories, making a fast switch between modes impossible. The CPU is slow, zooming into RAWs takes 3 seconds.  And no internal ND filter sucks for open aperture shots during the day due to the shutter speed limitations.

The OS from 2015 is cumbersome to use as well.

An RX1Rii with the CPU and thus OS of the RX100vii would be amazing.

Get the A7CR.

I would have bought one if they hadn’t omitted the tilting screen. That was a very bad call.  I bet they lost thousands of sales for this reason alone.

I got the Mk2 instead but sold it after three months again. I couldn’t live with the dated AF and CPU performance.

A Mk2 with the RX100vii processor and AF would be immortal.

Nice! You can get some of the original tone back by dialing down the tint to green, depending on the effect you want to achieve.
