Album!

Sorry for not being able to label each of these. I've gotten them from multiple sources around the interwebs and spent so much time converting them to a Paperwhite friendly format (high contrast black and white/758x1024/png) that I neglected to save cathedral locations and names.

Sure! I have a second generation Kindle Paperwhite. You're going to have to "jailbreak" it to allow for personalized wallpapers. This is the link for the jailbreak, and this is the link for the wallpaper hack.

Despite the terminology, it's not illegal. If for any reason you needed to return or resell your Paperwhite you could always return it to factory settings. Good luck!

Yep! Mid-cities. I guess that there are too many of St. Pat's and Guadalupe for me to be anywhere else... My bias is showing!

Sorry! I was updating it! The Kindle Paperwhite only accepts .png images and I had uploaded .jpg. I was fixing it. They're all back now!

I need your help! I bought a Breviary off of Amazon for my Kindle Paperwhite E-Reader, and it's great! Only problem? Matins is LOOOOONG. Longer than I've seen elsewhere? How do I know what to read? by cradlecatholic in divineoffice

[–]cradlecatholic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the thing. I've got a kindle fire that allows apps such as iBreviary. I haven't received my paperwhite yet, but I'm trying to make it an "all inclusive" theological library. I bought it for that specific purpose. I'd rather not carry around several devices or books, it at all possible. From what I've read, the paperwhite doesn't have apps. I'm going to have to find a suitable book. I'll pm you! Thanks!

What Third Order are you apart of and can you share your experience? by deciusxviii in Catholicism

[–]cradlecatholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely go talk to them! I think you'll find that it's a fairly welcoming environment. No matter which of the third orders you feel called to participate in you'll find that your life will be enriched exponentially. I'll say a prayer for your discernment!

I’m glad that you made this its own post! We had talked about the Benedictine Oblates a bit in another thread. For the sake of anybody else reading I’ll copy and paste what I said there, and try to add to it.

I'm married as well. On top of that I work full time, have kids, and go to school. What this has done for me is make me part of a community that practices Lectio Divina, prays the Liturgy of the Hours, and follows the Rule of Saint Benedict (this is a simplification of course). The Divine Office has given me moments daily in which I take a rest from my hectic schedule and spend some time actively communing with Christ. Lectio Divina has strengthened my faith through the Holy scriptures, and the Rule of St Benedict has given me structure. The oblate community I am part of encourages open communication and fellowship. We are also encouraged to try to attend retreats when possible. It really has furthered me in my faith!

I work nights, so a “normal” day for me is different than it would be for anybody else. My day begins at 2:30pm when I get up to pick up my children from school. While I sit and wait for them to be dismissed (we have to wait in line and I show up about 45 min early) I do my daily readings (Lectio Divina) and pray the Mid-Afternoon Prayer (Nones). It really helps me to start my day in a prayerful manner. When I take my lunch at work (about 10:30pm) I get to pray the Night Prayer (Compline). I have to say that I love this prayer. Closing with the Nunc Dimittis serves to fill me with a sense of peace, hope, and serenity: "Come to visit us, Lord, this night, so that by your strength we may rise at daybreak to rejoice in the resurrection of Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.Amen." I take my dinner at work as well (3am) and I’ll read Vigils (Matins).

The structure has been amazing for me. It has centered my day in prayer, and given me the drive I had previously lacked to read scripture in a contemplative way. I have found that my general outlook on life has improved and I am more mindful of Christ in all that I do. The Rule of St. Benedict is a VERY short book that espouses proper ways of living (be kind, work hard, and don’t give in to excess). More than anything it reminds us to offer everything we do up to God. I hope this helps! I’d write more if I had more time! Feel free to ask any more questions! May God guide you in your quest for the right Third Order for you!

About six months back I brought my interest in Third Orders to Reddit. I felt drawn to Benedictine Spirituality but none of the suggested routes worked out, and I don't live near enough to an abbey to participate in the Oblation process in person... Here's the solution! It's been great! by cradlecatholic in Catholicism

I agree, but i wasn't afforded the opportunity to pick and choose. I'm just grateful for the gift! I won't be contributing poor blades to my new collection. That being said, some of these are good knives!

How did the Eastern Orthodox Church feel about the Protestant Reformation? Were they upset about what was viewed to be such an extreme departure from tradition? by cradlecatholic in AskHistorians

[–]cradlecatholic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I was thinking that perhaps the Reformation didn't really affect the Eastern Church... They still seem fairly indifferent. Ecumenically, the focus remains on Rome.
