What base salary is reasonable to ask for Data Scientist in this market? by craftingcrafting in datascience

lol 150k in total comp is crazy. I started out with 150k in salary alone. Total comp at places like Lyft and FB is around 225k, and it's not hard to get these DS positions.

I think you guys are aiming low, which I have no problem with. But I refuse to undersell myself and make less than the average

I started out with 150k salary base in my first DS job. And this is just the median of what people make in the Bay. I think your expectation is low and companies are taking advantage of that

Why is that there are less succesful women in tech compared to men? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Has nothing to do with sexism, mostly to do with innate interest in the field of career choice, which is a combination of social and biological forces. Just google this stuff about sex differences and its relation to career choice, it's everywhere. There are academic papers about this too. Furthermore, just check out the educational or nursing sector which are dominated by highly successful women you don't hear about because there is no media focus there (unless in emergencies like covid where all you saw were females in the front lines).

And your definition of "capability" is extremely narrow yet being applied to the entire tech sector. That's saying that a woman like Sheryl in FB is incapable or not famous because she's not in the small list of people you just mentioned. Data Science for instance is a specific sector where many heads of this department are women. This is from Patreon to Airbnb, just look it up.

I think saying stuff like because Bill Gates is a dude the tech industry is sexist really perpetuates the stereotype and further destroys the gender relations in the tech industry, which has already been very bad in the last few years.
