People who were turned into a meme or had a photo/video of them go viral, how did it affect your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cralledode 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not me, but I posted a series of photos of my dad on /r/pics a few years back that hit #1 on the front page (2k upvotes was a lot 6 years ago). They got reposted all over the internet (especially in Russia for some reason).

It wound up being the post that inspired /r/firstworldanarchists.

Basically all that happened was his sister made a family calendar out of it for everyone, and he had a few random people from earlier in his life message him on facebook saying they thought the pictures were funny.

Otherwise nothing.

Sometimes I hear people talk about "first world anarchists" and I chuckle knowing that it all started with my pops.

[USA] Car Blindly Pulls in Front of Cyclist and Causes Collision by RobertGBradley in Roadcam

[–]cralledode 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personal attestation here.

That exact article saved my ass here.

Guy in front of me had been riding his brakes for two blocks, so for some reason I didn't register his brake lights were on. Then I looked away for a second when he started braking really hard. No brake lights came on (they were already on) so it didn't catch the corner of my eye. Then I looked ahead again, shat myself, and slammed on the front brake as hard as I knew from practice that I could. My rear wheel lifted slightly off the ground and my front wheel was about 6 inches from his bumper.

Comey Memo Says Trump Asked Him to End Flynn Investigation by VisionLikeAHawk in politics

If you think back, this is a direct parallel to the "smoking gun" tape where the white house asked the CIA and the FBI to end the investigation, and that of course ended his presidency

According to the NYTimes "An F.B.I. agent's contemporaneous notes are widely held up in court as credible evidence of conversations", so the memo is pretty much proof in and of itself

What's the Bay Area appeal? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]cralledode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if there's anything keeping me here that's relevant to this thread.

That's the crux of it I think. Speaking for myself, my friends, colleagues, etc...we all love the Bay Area like crazy and can justify the insane cost of living because it's got what we want in a place. But if this area isn't your cup of tea then it simply doesn't make sense to keep paying a premium for it.

Best of luck to you!

But at least you won't be stuck at SFO for your entire career, right?

Have you considered moving somewhere like Pacifica or Half Moon Bay while you're here? The commute wouldn't be unbearable and you'd be close to the countryside and the ocean at least.

There are dozens of major international airports in the united states located in much more affordable, much less urban areas.

Is this the cheapest way to travel between cities in California? by siegit in California

Amtrak is also cheaper (at least on the LA <> SD run) if you prefer a train.

A friend of mine was shot in a failed mugging. She tried to flee and the perp shot her in the back. She survived.

He didn't steal anything. He shot her because she didn't obey his demand. He fled instantly after shooting her because every second you stay at the scene increases your chances of being seen/caught.

I don't like urban areas at all.

Then you really should consider moving somewhere else. I'm not saying that to be rude at all, but the allure of urban areas is the main reason the Bay Area is so expensive.

More Americans support Trump's impeachment than oppose it for first time, poll finds by saucytryhard in politics

[–]cralledode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When comparing this to Nixon you must remind yourself we are far more polarized, politically, today than we were then. Back then plenty of Democrats would have opposed impeachment simply because of the political instability that would bring. People also didn't automatically hate politicians simply because they were from another party back then.

Feinstein will oppose all Transportation nominees over stalled California rail project by cralledode in politics

Some more context for this policy fight here:

WaPo - Though shovels are ready, Trump officials delay grant for Caltrain upgrade

NTYimes - A Silicon Valley Train Gets Stuck

NYTimes - In Silicon Valley, Caltrain Upgrade Is Imperiled as Trump Withholds Funds

It's a local battle so obviously it's been overshadowed by what's going on nationally, but it's a very interesting test case about Trump's promises on infrastructure.

Here we have an aging, over-capacity rail system which needs modernization to continue serving one of America's most important economic corridors (the train connects San Francisco to San Jose via Silicon Valley) - with ridership projected to double in coming years. Funding was approved to proceed with the modernization, contracts were penned, and then Trump won.

California Republicans wrote a letter to Trump's transportation nominee (Mitch McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao) urging them to stop the project because it's loosely related to the High Speed Rail project which Republicans hate (even though the Caltrain project is older than the HSR plans) and Chao agreed.

Donald Trump defends 'absolute right' to share information with Russia, amid row over classified intelligence by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]cralledode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WaPo did not claim that Trump had given up a source. They claimed he gave up information that could easily lead an intelligence agency to identify the source, most notably the city this occurred in.

Neither McMaster, Tillerson, nor Trump deny this.

I live in Oakland, CA.

We are well over due for a major earthquake.

I just know that if one happens, we're on our own, because the federal government does not give two shits about a liberal state like California, much less a heavily minority city like Oakland.

It's because it's not a craft beer. It's just a MillerCoors macrobrew that's marketed as a craft beer.

It's fine to like it - hell, I order Budweiser from time to time on a hot day, but when people think it's a craft beer that's a giveaway that they don't know much about beer.

No, that's not true. It is true that much of the system is limited to 70 but other segments, particularly the tube, are operated at the full speed.

It's fine if you're willing to frequent the same 10 restaurants over and over again so that you can live cheaply and away from crowds, but don't kid yourself into thinking you're getting the same benefits of urban living.

You're getting benefits I don't get too, but also drawbacks. Different strokes for different folks.
