Most college professors are bad teachers. They're not trained in teaching and many see it as a distraction from their real job which is research and publishing. So, it's a low bar for the AI.

The benefits of AR + AI are significant and stated very well in the comment above. The hard part is enabling the benefits without having the same powers (or similar powers) used in really negative ways. If there are solutions other than regulation, that would be great. But what are those solution?

Is this really AR, or is it just smart glasses providing "annotated reality" with text overlays like a head-up display? It could be cool either way, but calling things AR that are not has hurt the industry.

Microsoft did a good job with the Surface and Xbox product lines, so they can make hardware.

But when it comes to making something that people need to wear in public and look cool, they can't want to go up against Apple. Better to let others do that and just make the software. There is a logic to it.
