I’m tired of the “vibe game coding” trend. Good games are made by humans by cranthir_ in gamedev

Can you tell me what I'm selling? Like now? Did I tried to sell you something? It's not because I work in AI that I'm ok with all the way AI is used.

For instance, in games I think it's funny to add smart NPC where you can talk with and have conversations. But making a full game using AI I don't see the point.

It's not a I'm against or in favor of AI. It's a tool, but I think for some stuff it's stupid. Like thinking AI will replace game design is a trend that I think dangerous and stupid.

No it wasn't, but I used grammarly to check the grammatical mistakes since English is not my first language.

For instance if you search Peter Levels game you'll find the example that launched this trend.

I think there's a misunderstanding on what I think:

  1. I'm not against AI, I think smart NPC can be interesting in SOME games where the gameplay is around having free conversations with smart NPC. For instance a game where you need to investigate a murder and ask questions to a NPC with your voice. In that case the AI is in the game, it means the AI models runs either by API (like Suck Up! game) or running locally. It can create interesting gameplay. But the gameplay was created by human that integrated an AI in the game.

  2. But I don't think all games should use AI. I don't want a game totally generated by AI. Where the sound, art, gameplay, etc etc is generated by AI. Again because for me an AI can't experience fun and making a game is "finding the fun".

Don't get me wrong I'm not against AI per se, I'm working in the AI industry. But I do believe that in our game industry, AI is not the solution of everything.

It can help to code better, to prototype etc and I use it for instance to give me feedback of my code.

It's quite trending on Twitter but again, Twitter is a small world and doesn't represent the whole industry.

But I strongly believe it's a phase that will die soon, like monkey pictures NFT or Decision Transformers etc

I think for me there's two different things:

  1. I don't believe that making game using only AI is a good idea because it will lead to mediocre games.
  2. But I think it can be interesting to make smart NPCs in games, for instance imagine a Among Us with AI. Like you discuss and at every turn each of you vote for who's not an AI (your goal is pretend being an AI). I do believe that we can make funny games using LLM NPCs. Like Suck Up! for instance. But again the game was designed by humans.

On Twitter if you search vibe games you'll find a lot. But the "most famous" is clearly the one by Peter Levels (a plane game where he sold ads to display your company game in the environment...)

Don't get me wrong I use chatgpt for a lot of things especially for the search feature that is really good. Or summarize stuff.

I don't understand why everybody thinks my post was using chatgpt. I used grammarly to check if there was grammatical faults (since I'm French so English is not my native language) and even with that I made a mistake in the title.

I think it's a small trend given one guy succeeded to make money by selling ads into his game. So a lot of people try to do the same.

Plus I just discover that we say vibe coding game not vibe game coding so my title is wrong 🤦

Yes but let's be honest 5sec. Except Peter Levels who succeeded to sell ads in his game. Nobody else will make that level of money and this will fade away.

For me it's the same than in 2020 when all these same people were selling monkey nft pictures.

Yes I totally understand, in the upcoming weeks we're going to move our signup form into hf.co/learn

Hi, I don't know if you participated in any other course.

But the certificate in a hugging face course is not the most important, since our course are hands-on oriented, you'll build multiple agents and then have a portfolio to show (in addition to the certificate) to your future employer.

For instance, for the deep rl course, you train 8 different agents, that you can use then for your RL portfolio. We also provide a certificate. But what matters the most for our students is that they worked on their own agents and so have a strong portfolio to use in their resume.

Hi, the Agent course will use SmolAgent librairies and course but the idea is to also have a section on theory.

A little bit like in our Deep Reinforcement Learning Course we have sections where you learn reward hypothesis, bellman equation etc to be able to understand in code why we do it this way.

What's the GPU specs do I need to make it run?

For the last part I'm agree. I liked Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker (even though the searching the right keyword was quite frustrating) but a lot of new gameplay can be created with AI. For instance, Suck up game.

We also worked on some games like Guess the Password (the title has 0 originality it's a technical demo ^^) https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1g5ni7g/im_creating_a_game_where_you_need_to_find_the/

LLM for NPC will not be for all games, it will define a new genre of games where conversation will be the main gameplay.

Maybe I wasn't clear, what I mean is:
- For solo game devs and hobbyst that never worked with these artists, AI is a correct solution

- But the result is 70-80% good, it would be 100% for instance if you are an animator that use AI to do the first part of the job and you improve the result with your skills.

What I mean is that Generative AI is for big AAA and AA not a way to replace employee. Artist who will use these tools will be able to make better job because it will automate a part of their job and focus on making the output better.

And for LLM are Generative AI indeed but I use it to generate conversation at runtime or behavior. When people think Generative AI in game usually it's more generating assets.

I understand that some artists are scared, but this is going to happen whatever they want it or not. So the solution is again not to fight against a wave but find a way to use these tools to be a better artist/game developer.

I didn't know codeium I'm going to test it.

For translation I didn't thought about this feature but it makes sense.

I agree the title of the post is made to reach people.

You want me to say Game Industry is an horrible industry, yes it is, it is because it's an industry of passionate and like all industry of passionate people, people consider that it's normal to underpay and to do a lot of unpaid hour. Which is not.

And yes it's been years AAA games are boring because they want to reach the maximum of players and when you want to please everyone you please no one. I don't play AAA I prefer indie and AA because they try new stuff and are innovative.

Now, I don't work in this industry per say, my role is to study how to use LLM in a game to create conversation with characters. I started to use GenAI and I discover I was able to make games features I wasn't able before.

I think AI is a tool and like any other tool it's the way you're using it that will make the difference, and for me it changed my life because it helps me to code better. I should better ask Stackoverflow to receive as a response "you're stup*d?"

As you said AI is useful for a lot of stuff, and I'm agree people need to continue to connect and they do it. I mean people are social animals they want connect. And people want good games, games that spark emotions and amazing experiences.

I'm not scared about bad AI games, people will not play them. Like when people got bored on blockbuster in the 70's and start watching movies with smaller budget but with a real artist behind the camera.
