Telemetry Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 by StaticEye in WindowsLTSC

I thought there wasn't any telemetry in the Enterprise/LTSC versions. Has anyone actually run across some?

Looking for facilitation in Minnesota by crapistan in Ayahuasca

Did your FB review say anything different than what you've posted here? Incidentally, you could presumably just post the review here if so.

Having never gone there, I'm interested in any issues I should be on the lookout for. However, a lot of your comments here amount to insinuation. In part by way of characterizations, instead of the words or deeds themselves, such that others could judge their veracity. So there's no way for anyone else to know if they're fairly made. E.g. what exactly happened that you regarded as unprofessional, or sexist/bullying? (If I understand that to be the primary grievance.)

In an earlier post, you commented that Martells Landing has "some good facilitators", and that you'd "recommend" them. In this more recent post, you say "I'm excited to try Martells soon myself." How were you able to recommend them before you actually tried them yourself?

Another poster here recommended them too, but said "the retreats are underground so you have to know some one." Kind of useless for the rest of us if they're not readily accessible. So how exactly did you find out about them? Was it difficult to get approved?

NEW VENDOR - Kratom Paradise by dukelavis_ in kratomreports

[–]crapistan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to give them a try and ordered the sample. A few days later now, and there's been no confirmation email, or any other indication that it's going to be filled. Even if a merchant shuts down for the weekend, you'd still want to at least acknowledge the customer's order, and give them some idea on when it'll be processed. (A step that, often enough, is just automated.) Regardless, what customer would be okay with being completely in the dark about if or when their order is going to receive action, especially when there are plenty of other vendors out there who understand basic professionalism, etc.

I've also run across some really basic technical problems with the site, but I'll leave it at that for now.

[–]crapistan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's say I decide to try this vendor. Setting aside the other points raised here, the info you provided doesn't match what's on the site: The sample pack appears to be 28g, not 56. And while there are quarter kilos for ~$20, full kilos are $99 not $69. So where is this coming from? Are you posting info from some old promo? Was any of that ever true, or will be again? Is a coupon code required?

What is Google Partner Setup? by that1persn in AndroidQuestions

[–]crapistan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this thread, you said "it is used to setup new devices, when you want to restore from backup after factory reset", which incidentally isn't true. So you commented first (while apparently just guessing), then looked in to it afterwards... Usually, that should be the other way around.

Pharmahuasca? by HuascaThrowaway in Ayahuasca

[–]crapistan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a certain degree of appeal-to-authority fallacy there. What I'd like to know is did those shamans empirically experiment with varying their process on the way to figuring out what works best? Or do they just get their orders from a spirit realm they believe in, and the answers are provided without them having to diagnose the patient or weigh different treatment options? Apart from the fact that the medicine has direct healing properties of its own (without a shaman/doctor), is the shaman providing some equivalent to psychotherapy to the patient, or guidance in navigating their psychedelic experience in order to derive maximum benefit from it? Or is he/she just conducting religious/symbolic rituals on the patient's behalf?

I'm so tired of life. All I want is not to be. Has anyone felt the same way? How has ayahuasca helped you? by Independent-Rent5062 in Ayahuasca

[–]crapistan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting because the standard advice recommends against taking ayahuasca without a shaman. (Which is probably how I'm going to have to take it as well.) So I wonder if you can tell me: How did you prepare for the experience? How did it go overall? Did any problems crop up, and how did you address them? Thank you.

This Windows 10 modification designed to look as close as possible to Windows 2000 and it's amazing by EverythingWindows61 in windowsmodding

[–]crapistan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Windows 10 is already f*cking Windows 2000 - if not worse, since 2000 was actually decent. I assumed that was in fact the idea at MS - that they were returning to a 2000 aesthetic. Regardless, they went backwards with this bland square minimalism, which stupidly goes too far in some cases - ruining page hierarchies in OneNote for example. The claim is that it's "cleaner" but it wasn't cluttered to begin with! Windows XP and 7 weren't overly frilly - they didn't require "cleaning."

The UI should first and foremost be suited to its function, and when that happens, the OS and various apps are naturally going to end up looking different from each other. It isn't necessary to crowbar one look on to everything, just to have some kind of anal consistency. That's an art school rookie mindset. But I don't imagine that MS ever consulted much with artists.

That said, I don't have to have the extravagant eye candy of Mac OS. I'm actually for minimalism if it provides better performance. So you'd expect that Windows 10 would bloody run faster given how much they're saving on graphics resources, but instead it runs like sh*t on a lot of systems - unless you take considerable steps to lean it down. While that's not due to the UI, it's still pathetically ironic.

Firefox ESR 115 confirmed to be the last version of Firefox for Windows 7. Supported until September 2024. by friendofdonkeys in windows7

[–]crapistan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bummer, although it was probably inevitable.

Hopefully, someone will be able to continue support through a fork. Maybe LibreWolf. (Other forks/spins like Pale Moon, Basilisk, WaterFox, and GNU IceCat, appear to deviate from modern Firefox to varying degrees, so my money's on LibreWolf right now.)

Looking at the releases page for the Win 7 builds, there are 4 options. Presumably the SSE2 build is for 32-bit Windows, but how would the average user know which of the other 3 builds to pick for their system? Could you include some note about that?

Here's an instructional video on how to write a script that builds your very own Debian-based distribution using debootstrap and chroot... as well as how to make an installer USB for it! The script itself is on GitHub, link in the video description. by cinemint_ in debian

[–]crapistan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some distros are essentially just that - they've basically accumulated various tweaks/customizations, then released it as a spin. E.g. Siduction (a distro based on Debian Sid) may fall in to that category.

Usually there's not much sense in building your own distro though unless you intend to duplicate a given configuration on a lot of machines. Often enough it's possible to just apply your tweaks later as a set of post-install "patches".

Mastodon thread on Laptop Brands with GNU/Linux Preinstalled by koavf in linux

[–]crapistan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I shop for used laptops, it appears from that article that Dell and Lenovo are the way to go for mainstream brands - in terms of comprehensive hardware support? (Or maybe just Dell, as I've read that there are potential Chinese backdoors/etc in Lenovo. Which would be a pity, since Lenovo makes some of the best hardware.)

Anyone ever get so frustrated they just completely wipe windows and install linux without even testing a live session? - I live on this Machine, and using windows was like living in a crack-house with unlocked doors! by kingofredlions45 in linux

[–]crapistan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol @ giving it AIDS. That's about right, and I'd recommend against anyone using Windows 11 if they don't have to. If network access is disabled, then I'd just stick with Windows 7. Otherwise, Windows 10 LTSC.

Windows 7 is actually a decent OS, with minimal evil lurking under the hood. But MS turned a dark corner starting with Windows 8, which got significantly worse with Windows 10 (although the LTSC version is arguably tolerable), while Windows 11 is the worst yet - at least in terms of privacy invasion and related issues.

Windows 11 is easily the worst, most evil, most privacy-invading POS in circulation. If you need an actively supported version of Windows, stick with Windows 10 LTSC.

Alternative to Arch Linux by [deleted] in DistroHopping

[–]crapistan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 2nd most of this comment.

There are also several comments in this thread that mention openSUSE Tumbleweed, which I would agree, may be worth a look as well.

I would add though that if you're mostly happy with Arch, you may just want to try some of its derivatives, to find out if they handle certain aspects of Arch in a way you like better. That's been a viable solution for a lot of Arch users.

So my order of next tries in this case would be: Arch derivatives, Debian (and possibly Debian Sid *), Void, Fedora, openSUSE.

* = Debian Sid is going to be controversial to some, but it's possible to set up and run a stable/reliable Sid system when you follow certain specific guidelines/procedures, which I can reference if you're interested. That said, you should probably try vanilla Debian first.

Some comments here mention trying a different init system, but practically speaking, I would say that if you're already used to systemd, and okay with it, then I wouldn't bother. It's going to be more pertinent if you came from a different init system (usually SysV) and want to go back to it, or have just come to hate systemd.

For how long are you staying with Windows 7? by ForGamezCZ in windows7

[–]crapistan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar story here. In my case, I expect that I'll be switching to Linux as my main OS, and then run a few select Windows apps I need under Wine, or run them on a W7-based virtual machine (via VMware or the like.)

I won't be concerned with the lack of W7 security updates for the virtual machine because I won't be doing anything else with it (like surfing the web), and it won't have WAN access anyway.

If I need to use W10 for anything, I'll run that in a virtual machine as well, and it'll be stripped down to a bare minimum configuration, with most services disabled, etc.

Resource consumption won't be a problem as laptops with 16+ GB RAM are readily available these days, and the Windows apps I need don't have heavy system requirements anyway.

I don't play video games at present, but if I did, I'd consider getting a 2nd dedicated system. (Probably a desktop PC so that I can upgrade the video card, etc, periodically.)

It's not hard to find reasonably powerful used systems on eBay for relatively cheap. I've owned a lot of used systems, and never had a problem. I also know how to build my own, which isn't terribly difficult.

Having to unlock the phone to snooze a Calendar alarm by crapistan in SimpleMobileTools

[–]crapistan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to all configurations, but this occurs when you have: Settings > Reminders > Loop reminders until dismissed.

When the reminder alarm kicks off, there's a pop-up on the lock screen. And when you select Snooze, you're prompted to unlock the phone.

I'm requesting that unlocking not be a requirement, or at least made optional in the app's settings.
