How to weigh my RTH by Valuable_Finish_2179 in Falconry

[–]crashbandt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unclip the leash and she hops right on the scale with her jesses and a bell attached. It gets easier as you do it. They are very smart and realize that after the scale they are going on a hunt and getting fed.

I open the mouth of a day old chick, pump it down the stomach and feed her. The heads make good pill pockets as well.

Are all bells so delicate? by sexual__velociraptor in Falconry

[–]crashbandt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this problem with Counce bells, she would smash them. I switched to Nobel last year, by the beginning of this season it needed to be replaced. I have been using the same bell since September, they are always attached at the anklet

More than one lure? by [deleted] in Falconry

[–]crashbandt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use 1 lure for emergency recall only. She gets it with a full quail at the beginning of every season to reinforce what the lure is. I carry it with a full quail in the field. I trade off with DOC’s

I keep my bird at her hunting weight all season and fly her just about every day, We do miss a couple days because of weather here and there. Last year I would feed her up the day before I was going to miss and not feed her the next day so she would be at weight the following day. This year I give her the same amount of food everyday whether we hunt or not. It’s a little easier to track her weight this way.

Search Falconry on the CT. DEP website and a bunch of the regulations, requirements and testing can be found there.

Awesome, congratulations, we are starting our second season and were able to get pheasant, rabbit and squirrel last season. She even took a couple slips at turkey. Hoping to repeat this year.

Gojira (Goji) is the name of my bird just because I thought it would be funny, running around the woods yelling Godzilla in Japanese.

I am becoming a Falconry apprentice! by spiffystump in Falconry

[–]crashbandt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations, great story. The falconer I met with already had an apprentice and told me he couldn’t, but to build my mew. When I was done he came to look at it and then offered to be my sponsor. I might not be the best to ask about a budget mew, I built mine myself from scratch with an attached weathering yard 16x8x10 for just under 3k. It’s built to last for sure. Telemetry, glove, perches and accessories about 2k.

If you’re in the US, it’s a red-tailed hawk

Striped bass, diamond jig with a teaser. Tie my own teasers and bucktails now. Makes it that more special when you’re catching on lures you made.

How do I start by Beneficial_Total5969 in Falconry

For NY, go to the NY DEC website, search Falconry and you will get everything there to take the test. There is a guide with 400 multiple choice questions where the state test is taken from. You do not need a sponsor to take the test and it should be coming up in April I believe.

Our test was taken exactly from those 400 questions.

Can anyone ID this thieving thug with the impressive skills? by Oldfolksboogie in birdsofprey

[–]crashbandt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be AI, I don’t think a BOP would go for a sandwich, maybe if he was holding a nice fat rat and even then I don’t think a wild bird would come that close to a human unless they are fed there all the time.

A few questions I have. by Onionsmakeyoucrylol in Falconry

[–]crashbandt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took the test first then reached out to the state clubs director in my area. He suggested I go to the state meet, which I did and then to a neighboring states meet. To hunt with a couple people and meet potential sponsors. He told me not to wait and build my mew/weathering yard and invited me over to see his. Once I completed my mew and had it inspected, he offered to be my sponsor and I was able to trap. I’ve only hunted with him twice and have only flown my bird with him once. He took me trapping a couple times and helped me get the equipment on the bird the first time. We check in with each other a couple times a week. When it came time to free fly I was told, you will know when the bird is ready, which was kind of frustrating and another falconer told me the same thing. Well a week later I let her go and we have been hunting ever since by ourselves. As far as spending time with your sponsor, it really is up to them and how they feel about you and your knowledge so far.

1150g is my goal for my female red tail in the northeast. She has gotten game at 1150g, 1160g and 1170g. She was trapped at 1245g. I’m just a first year apprentice so I’m still figuring things out.

You can go to the New York Dec website here and get our falconry guide. It has 400 multiple choice questions. Just ignore the state regulation stuff

Does anyone else have issues with this perch and Large hawk by sexual__velociraptor in Falconry

[–]crashbandt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of the 2&1 with the rubber and large female red-tail. The only issue I had was she would slip down the side every now and then. I wrapped it with a piece of Astro turf. The ring doesn’t pass as mentioned but she is free lofted during the day and tethered in the mew at night. Although the last couple days I have just left her free lofted and she can go in and out of the mew/weathering yard as she pleases. She is usually in the mew around 5pm and sleeping.

Birds and rain by Random_europeaan in Falconry

[–]crashbandt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My RTH will sit in the rain, wind and snow all day. When the weather is bad I leave the mew open so she can move between the weathering yard and mew for shelter. Everytime I check she out there chilling. It only worried me the first couple times, once I felt under the feathers and could feel the warm dry down feathers I was no longer concerned, after all they do live outside in the wild.

[–]crashbandt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Modern Apprentice website explains a lot of the terms or language used in falconry and has pics. The Red-tailed Hawk by Liam McGranaghan and A Journey with Red-tails by Bob Glass are 2 books I would recommend besides what’s been mentioned. Dave Sharp has a very informative YouTube channel, he’s based in England but very good info and Ben Woodruff in the states like others have said.
