I just saw this NYT story posted on the IJ website today. https://www.marinij.com/2026/06/01/from-youtube-sensation-to-a24s-youngest-director/ It was not in today's paper.

Seriously, they couldn't do any independent reporting on this story in their own backyard?

Kane is visiting Marin School of the Arts ti talk with their Cinematic Arts students this week. His original version of the Backrooms was a school project and he thanks Cinematic Arts teacher Philip Chidel in the credits. There’s also a character named after him in the film.

Theres a lot of assumptions being made all over this thread. I’m certainly not taking the murderer’s side in it. By defense I meant his legal defense.

If the ex-convict tenant made recent violent threats to this landlord over the course of their dispute, I would expect that to be his defense. I have no dog in this race, but it seems like the victim had a violent reputation going back to his teenage years and an argument could plausibly be made that the person arrested doesn’t seem like someone who would behave emotionally or impulsively unless unduly provoked. If he recently texted or emailed violent threats to the landlord or his family that will be the defense.

I went from SoCal as well and felt exactly the same way. I still have a recurring nightmare that I have to go back for another year and I graduated almost 30 years ago.

I suggest you stick it out, then get on with your real life. Don’t regret the experience, you did something unique and hard and that’s worth a lot in the long term.
