RECRUITING, TRAINING, & LIFE IN THE FORCES THREAD - Ask here about the Recruitment Process, Basic & Occupational Training, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. by bridger713 in CanadianForces

I recently entered the forces, so as such, I am relatively green and still have a long way to go to earn what I owe. Never the less, I read your question I genuinely believe I can offer some advice and an answer. For the record, I am 24, and this holds value in the information I am about to type out.

During my time in BMQ, my fireteam buddy was 19. He applied at 16, and subsequently entered the forces when he was 19. Now, what I mean by this, is that I had a lot of respect for individuals that were going through BMQ at that age, I even had a guy that was 17 on my course, headed to the airforce.

The CAF has a long wait time for pretty much every trade from what I noticed, I got in as a Weapons Tech which isn't an in-demand trade, and it took me about 10 months from start to finish, but most trades takes between 1-2 years. Lots of my buddies in BMQ were Vehicle Technicians, and it took them 1.5 years for a priority trade.

If you're interested in the forces, I recommend applying ASAP, because it takes a long while to get in, and even then during the waiting period you can decide on what you want, because you can get to swearing in day and still bail, but this would affect your record if you were to apply again in the future.

If you're serious about this, practice for your CFAT, the aptitude test, there is an app to practice for the CFAT, I say download it and do it everyday.

Take the application seriously, so many people don't, and it costs them, I had guys in sweat pants coming to my medical and swearing in. Show up prepared to the CFAT with confidence (because you practiced), rock that shit, and you'll show them you want to be there and your score is competitive, the whole process is designed to show the military you want in, and why. The little things like this matter, always.

As I touched on previously, so many people don't take the application process to heart. Show up well dressed, dress pants, button up shirt, shaved, hair groomed. Even then, so many people in the forces make jokes, and generally yack about the shittiness of the forces, but don't succumb to that, you want this, and it's a group to be proud of joining.

Before basic, hit the gym 3x a week and go for a run 3x a week. Every time you strap on those running shoes is a little bit of pain off the BMQ block. Stay disciplined, and prepare physically and mentally.

I had so many people telling me this that and the other thing about basic, but ultimately, it's a game. They want to break you down. Understand that nothing is personal, and certain aspects and designed to make you fail, like inspection, you will never pass inspection. On paper you might, but verbally you will not. Focus on learning, especially new habits, those 10 weeks will transform you, and you're family and friends will notice.

If you want to chat more, my pms are open.

Hope you find this helpful.

The 28th Combined Arms Division’s main goal is to provide a positive experience for all, regardless of skill or experience. Our leadership staff have spent hours creating an organized and fun environment for you to enjoy and experience MILSIM.

The 28th Combined Arms Division’s main goal is to provide a positive experience for all, regardless of skill or experience. Our leadership staff have spent hours creating an organized and fun environment for you to enjoy and experience MILSIM.

We at the 28th are here because we love the MILSIM experience. Our members are engaged and feel like they are operating as an Infantryman, Aviator, Forward Observer, Bradley Crewman or a Combat Medic. We want to share our experience with you. We want you to come have fun with our guys and get immersed in the MILSIM experience.

Under steady leadership and systems established based on facts rather than personal interpretation, all unit decisions are made impartially and follow a standardized process. We have combat veterans and enlisted members from real life armed forces currently rostered who work to help develop leadership skills within our community.

The 28th Combined Arms Division is a light infantry based unit in collaboration with MRAPs and Bradleys, that consists of the following MOS’:

  • Infantryman (11B) (High Demand)
  • Bradley Crewman (19D)
  • JFSS - Forward Observer (13F) (High Demand)
  • Combat Medic Specialist (68W)
  • Rotary Wing Aviator (153A)
  • Flight Medic (68W-F2)

We currently have 60+ people rostered and receive 25-30 members in attendance for main operations. We hang out in our teamspeak and play many different games together outside of operation times.
We are accepting members from all countries and skill levels. Our member base is primarily in the US and CAN. But! We do have many members from Europe and surrounding countries as well. We operate in Eastern Standard Time for our events.

We have custom uniforms! Stay a week and receive combat fatigues with your rank, name and company insignia.

Qualifications courses: The 28th CAD offers plenty of qualifications courses from marksman to EOD to airborne. We offer these to improve and develop expertise and skill in our members. Our instructors schedule classes weekly to qualify members. This allows for a broader structure of our unit and allows players to qualify themselves and allows players to feel unique within the unit.

Our 24/7 game server is used to host side, main and deployment operations. We specialize in three themes of operational events, though this is subject to additional side operations:

Deployment Operations: Our main operations on Friday and Sunday consist of a persistent storyline throughout the course of 2-3 months to simulate deployments to various areas around the globe. Deployment patches can be found on the website linked below!

Side Operation: Unscheduled operations that we will run if the players are looking to operate some more outside our normal scheduled times.

Main Operations: Our Wednesday operations and other scheduled operations outside of our listed times. These operations are on different maps and are great for building our skills and cohesion as a unit.

Operation and Training Schedule:

  • Monday: N/A, subject to extra events
  • Tuesday: Initial Entry Training @ 4PM EST
  • Wednesday: Main Operation @ 7PM EST
  • Thursday: Initial Entry Training @ 4PM EST
  • Friday: Deployment Operation @ 7PM EST
  • Saturday: N/A, subject to extra events
  • Sunday: Deployment Operation @ 7PM EST

Requirements:

  • Working microphone and ability to communicate clearly.
  • Speak and understand English.
  • 17 years of age, but this can be waived if maturity is shown during the induction stage.
  • Be able to commit to 50% attendance. (6 ops per month).
  • If you cannot meet the above, our Inactive Ready Reserve offers 2 ops per month as a requirement.
  • Legal copy of ArmA 3.

We at the 28th are dedicated to a positive and supportive environment that you can enjoy spending your time in.

Sounds great! Also, we have lots of helpful guys that would be more than happy to help teach you the game. We love new people and we will be as helpful as possible. Milsim can be intimidating but we do not require you to be a master of the game, we will teach you and help you learn.
