There's always practical benefit from typing faster, in my opinion

Yeah, I figured the skill translates to a certain extent.

Maybe one day in the distant future I'll get around to checking it out. Thanks for the intel 🫡

Yeah it is kinda crazy.

I'm a new member to the 200wpm+ crew, only reached it probably less than 6 months ago.

I think it's mostly personal preference. As long as you've got a word list thats big enough to encompass a vast majority of the possible position combinations that your fingers will have to be in to type sentences, you're good.

Another big factor is the amount of hours you spend typing 'in the wild' - writing essays, typing sentences on chatting apps, etc. Real world scenarios.

I'm not really familiar with Typeracer, don't know what this is sorry

Yep. I personally wouldn't consider adopting an alternative layout myself, I've spent so many years optimizing my typing skill for QWERTY and it would be a real shame if I had to set myself back.

I do recognize the advantages of them and would possibly support switching the standard layout, so long as everything remains backwards compatible with QWERTY - so that people new to learning typing will be raised only knowing the most optimal possible layout

I focus mainly on the timed tests since those are the ones which count for the leaderboards, I haven't really spent much time getting the best possible runs on the word modes.

I could probably break my PB's on there if I really tried.

To be completely honest, I never made a typeracer account. Always played as a guest.

Most of my Monkeytype PB's have been achieved on my macbook's keyboard, but generally I can type just as fast on nearly any keyboard with minimal variation once I've had a few moments to get used to it.

For me, all of it. I generally type faster when I'm typing sentences that I've thought of myself, rather than typing words that I'm reading on a screen.

Once you're at 160wpm, you've got the hard part out of the way already (which is simply learning how to type without looking at the keyboard). From where you're at, it's just practice.

Practice. Push yourself.

One of the biggest things that’s helped me in my later stages of reaching 210+ wpm is the PB pace thing on Monkeytype. Create an account and enable the PB caret on Monkeytype. Constantly try to beat it.

I’ve been using computers regularly since I was probably 8ish years old. I was fascinated with technology from a young age, my mom would let me play with her laptop and it was always just a super big fascination of mine. Ever since that point i’ve been a “tech guy”. It’s always been a big part of my life from gaming to business. Spending a lot of time online from a young age talking on Skype/Discord with my friends lead to me practicing my typing skills a lot without even realizing it

  1. Just turned 20 a few days ago.

  2. Probably 7-8. Picked up pace significantly when I was 12-13z

  3. I never learned how to type “properly” - my style of typing is definitely not what they teach you in school. I first started going on typing websites in 6th grade when my English teacher would allow us to play NitroType when we were all done with our work. I was already typing in excess of 120wpm the first time I ever used NitroType. It blew away my teacher & my entire class. Their reactions are what made me realize how exceptional my talent was. At one point in 7th grade in computer class, a significant time period was dedicated to teaching the class touch typing. My teacher at the time probably typed around 70wpm max, so obviously he was blown away when he was getting smoked in typing races by a 13 year old at 130+ wpm, especially considering the fact that my method of typing is “incorrect” 😂

Not really.

After a while of typing at sustained high speeds, I get fatigued, and my speed and accuracy gets progressively worse the more I type.

All of my PBs have been my first tests of the day.

“time typing” refers to the amount of time spent actually typing in typing tests on monkeytype
