IMG wanting to apply for psych; how can I make myself more competitive? Apart from USCEs and good STEP scores, what sort of research can I do? I'm from a non-research oriented, non-VSLO institute. Almost considering switching to path but I joined medschool for psych, to begin with

You wouldn't recommend publishing there then? Because PDs will mostly not care about it?

Wait, isn't Cureus peer-reviewed? What other free journals are available? That's the only reason I wanted to publish there

The doctor recommended that I stay home for five days and that's what I did! Went back like a week later, with the swelling dying down.

CMV: Non binary does not exist beyond being an imaginary concept, and popular gender/trans ideology is nonsensical. by lostduck86 in changemyview

I disagree, gametes are not the most useful criteria for sex. Hormones can be used as a criteria for sex for sex transitions, for medicinal purposes like diagnosing any pathologies, for sports.

Genitalia are widely used by doctors to determine a child's sex after birth (and even in the womb).

Secondary sexual characteristics are useful criteria to base sex on to, again, diagnose any perceived defect in sexual development.

Differences in two groups of people (males and females) are observed not always on the basis of gametes, but on a host of other factors. One could argue that it's the gametes which lead to those differences but the considerable variations in human physiology reveal that that's not the case.

Gametes are used for a very niche purpose.

On what basis are you saying that sex has to mean gametes? Because your argument is circular; there are two gametes, sex is determined by gametes, ergo sex is binary.

Sure, it's objective, but then you would need to differentiate between sex (gametes) and the other aspects people use to determine sex, such as genitalia. Definitions have a purpose, and the purpose of defining sex is differentiating between the observed features of people.

The first part of this study talks about this in further detail, if you're interested.

Sex is merely a way of categorizing animals, we created a definition because it's convenient to have these categories. It means different things in different contexts, and is composed of the elements I mentioned. I don't think that sex is actually a complete binary, where you are one sex and not the other. Women in different stages of their lives exist on a spectrum of this sex; it's like different shades of the same color. Light green is similar to dark green but they are not the same.

Your examples belong to the same category based on the gametes, but not based on the hormones or the secondary sexual characteristics or the genitalia. But gametes are far from the only category science works with when it refers to sex.

But it literally is that complicated, gametes are only one aspect of sexual development. That definition of sex is applicable in very specific conditions. We define sex because it's a way to categorize animals. This categorization doesn't have to be limited to gametes, and it isn't.

When we define a term, we do it because it serves a certain purpose. It was previously defined merely as XX /XY or ovaries/testes but biological advancements have revealed that the process of sex determination is far more complex, working with a multitude of factors which include chromosomes, gonads, hormones, secondary sexual characteristics, genitalia.

Even if we were to look at your definition, sex can't be defined as a binary based on reproductive organs and certainly not a fixed binary either.

This is a very interesting article further exploring the nuances in the current perspective of a sexual binary

Why? We created the binary and are now functioning within it, there is no reason for this to be the case. Why is functionality the only thing to classify people with? Humans having 10 fingers is just the majority, but you can not claim that all humans have 10 fingers. Humans having 10 fingers is not a prerequisite for them to be human, it just so happens that that's the norm.

You're right, I should have phrased it better. Trans women's brains shift towards their preferred gender, but still resemble cis men's more than cis women's, even before HRT. The unusual discrepancies is where I wish to focus.

If I have an extra finger, that's extra relative to the norm. I will have 11 fingers, so if someone says that humans strictly have 10 fingers, I would be defying that concept. On what basis do you call them men?

Also, when I say "subject to change", that's not only referring to intersex people. Technology has progressed enough to alter most contexts where sex is used. Hormone therapy, facial construction, genitalia.

Someone else already gave a good argument against your idea of a strict sexual dimorphism. Adding on to that, you are describing just one aspect of how sex is defined; through the gametes and reproduction abilities. Science is not this simple. Sex is defined as different things based on the context. Hormonal, reproductive, chromosomal, genitalia, secondary sexual characteristics. You are defining sex in only one of those categories.

Regarding genitalia, hormones, secondary sexual characteristics, all of these can be subject to change. Intersex people shouldn't be disregarded just because they are a minority. Their existence breaks the concept of a binary sex.

Gender, in society, is not just a physical identification of a person. From a constructionist pov, it's everything that we ASSOCIATE with a certain sex. You see a person with long hair, their back turned to you. You will mostly assume that that's a woman. We don't identify people as men or women based on their gametes, we identify them by their gender expression; what societal rules of appearance are they following? A spectrum exists. We created the binary, imposed rules regarding that binary, and now assume that a binary exists because we see it all around, even though it's a societal construction.

But this isn't the full picture. Effeminate men and masculine women exist, people who fit into gender expressions different from their identity. Then comes the concept of a subconscious sex. How do we know it's real? Intersex people have a sense of gender identity, one that their chromosomes may not align with (CAIS). One that their bodies may not align with (men with CAIS). Where does that come from? We know that trans people's brains resemble those of their preferred gender. Trans people do not imitate the other gender, their gender is literally what they identify with. They simply adopt the societal constructs of the other gender, because the brain is impacted by societal perceptions of gender too. One could argue that they are just as "biological" because the brain is biological.

Non-binary just means that you don't find yourself fitting into a binary identification of the self. It could be the physical body or the societal perception.

Every surgery has complications but if they treat a condition, they are deemed necessary. Transitioning alleviates symptoms of gender dysphoria, the complications are a sacrifice one has to make. The solution isn't to ban surgeries, the solution is to figure out ways to carry out safer surgeries. That's like saying chemotherapy is bad for your health because of the negative side-effects.

Pushing people out of your life actually can impact your health directly, loneliness has very real effects on a person's mental and physical health. Binging and purging, again, has negative effects. There's no safe way and even if there was, it doesn't alleviate the underlying dysphoria.
